A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I wouldn't recommend it. My daughter loves it. Its tolerable for what it is (I've seen worse kids shows). Was just curious is it was a popular thing in Australia...like how iCarly is here.

Cheri Pi:

Just tuned in, heard the word boogaloo, brain exploding!

I like that painting more and more as I stare at it; would love to see it in person. Thanks for that photo, ausmanx. That may have to go up on my wall. Too cool.

I saw Joe Bataan play in Toronto a few years ago. It was a gorgeous summer night by the water. He was charming. His wife was on stage with him. He introduced her as his ball-and-chain. Regardless, he was charming and the music was super sweet hot.

(mta) Tony:

Hi Trouble, can you ask "why out of 10,000 CD titles, the 2 most difficult for me to have found were Ray Barretto's "Charanga Moderno" and Celia Cruz/Johnny Pacheco's "Celia and Johnny." WHY are these two GREAT albums almost impossible to find on CD? Just wondering if he knew. Thanks!

I'm loving this Harvey Averne number. It makes me feel like i'm a detective in 1970s NYC.
  11:06am

okay, thanks.

Marshall Stacks:

Hi Trouble and guests!
I did some reading up on Mr. Averne a year or so ago. Fascinating guy! My question: how did you like Terry Riley's use of You're No Good (great song, by the way) in his work of the same name? And was that the first sampled song ever?
Avatar This Is The Modern World with Trouble Marathon 2024 Swag For Life Member 11:10am
trouble:

hey marshall stacks! harvey talked about that earlier in the show and claimed it was the first...
  11:14am
Brian in UK:

Top job today, trouble. Respect to your guests.
  11:15am
Marshall Stacks:

I'll have to listen to the archive. I'm dying to hear about it. (It's still early here in California and I'm just tuning in.)
If I had looked at the schedule and known about your guests I might have planned to get up earlier....

That is, I would have Gotten Down earlier!
  11:22am
Cecile:

this guy in Hong Kong has a 300 sq foot apt, with sliding walls for everything!
  11:24am
Cecile:

One whole ceiling to floor wall is CDs - but I bet you could use records. He just moves walls like those filing cabinets on risers with cranks big companies had.
  11:28am
joe:

I missed the speaking of that book.
  11:34am
Titus in GA:

Gotta jet, Trouble. Much luv & thx to you and your guests. Great show, as always and hope to be here next week for the Requests show. Cheers:)

love goes to buidings on fire by will hermes, cover illustration by mark alan stamaty. great read!!!
  11:34am
joe:

Love Goes... is one of the reasons along with a BBC doc I saw recently as to why I have been so obsessed with NYC latin music lately.
  11:38am
Cecile:

joe ,if you are truly obsessed, Stereo Review wrote reams on Fania records and even did a feature or two. Their coverage in the 70s was very good, and you may still be able to find old issues cheap.
  11:38am
Cecile:

Weren't Panamanians also a large early Latin community in New York?
  11:40am
joe:

@Cecile cool thanks I will have to check that out. I've just been kind of shooting in the dark on stuff so some background would be great.
  11:44am
Cecile:

No problem, joe. That Will Hermes book was the first places besides that magazine that really put all the different threads together - he did it after the fact, they were doing it as it happened.

I remember being amazed as a teenager reading that people actually had shrines to Celia Cruz because she was so loved.
  11:45am
Marmalade Kitty:

Hola!!! :)
  11:50am
Mike East:

We just had willie colon in the studio a few weeks ago. Its worth mentioning that of all the different types of musical groups we have that range from hip hop to broadway/orchestras to rock, Salsa is by FAR the loudest by many decibels...even when they aren't mic'd up.
  11:53am
joe:

Thank You so much Trouble and Harvey this has been super cool.
  11:55am
Lucky:

@ (mta) Tony - We have "Celia and Johnny" at the Paterson Free Public Library here in Paterson, NJ.
  11:56am

  11:56am

  11:56am

Where do I put my request in for your all request show?
  7:22pm
