Listener comments!

  8:45am duke:

Good Morning Doug. Bang a gong or gamelan or whatever those things are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50am Doug Schulkind:

Hey Duke,
Big-ass bamboo is what that is. Grows only in one place on the planet.
  8:56am ndbob:

morning, Doug, Duke, everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56am Doug Schulkind:

Hi there ndbob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

There is no truth to the rumor that Samuel L. Jackson will be reading all the mic breaks on today's show.
  9:06am ndbob:

ha!
  9:13am Brian in UK:

Doug, duke, ndbob nice to be here; to be here, nice.
  9:14am ndbob:

Hi Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Doug Schulkind:

Brian in UK is here! Hide the good china!
  9:23am duke:

This is great music for pretending to work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

Unless, of course, you are a licensed mariachi and Mexican garage rock inspector. Then you're screwed.
  9:32am Brian in UK:

Doug, Los Strwck are Welsh derivation, those that did not pitch up in Patagonia arrived in Mexico. It means the travellers from across the water who cannot read the stars.
  9:33am Licensed Mariachi Inspector:

I beg to differ, hermano.
  9:35am seang:

it's time to boogie
  9:36am Brian in UK:

duke your work is really buggered now, something tells me this is going to be a 'mummy' of a set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Doug Schulkind:

Brian, damned if it doesn't look Welsh. Should've segued into some Meic Stevens: DJ Lost Opportunity #717.
  9:40am Brian in UK:

Doug we went into a shop in Aberystwyth the other week, by the by the town has the largest Camera Obscura in the world. Anyway there were FOUR Meic Stevens CDs for sale & it was only a gift shoppe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

Bob Dylan is the American Meic Stevens.
  9:42am duke:

@Brian the only problem with pretending to work is that they pretend to pay me.
  9:43am still b/p:

Good morning.
Real shadow-world danger junkies know the sharpest risks and thrills are not in black ops, but in lost ops.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

I am working toward a master's degree in Lost Ops. My thesis is on FDR's Court-Packing debacle and how it derailed the New Deal.
  9:52am Alex in Illinois:

Good morning. The worst thing about arriving to work after 08:00 North American Central time is missing the beginning of this show.
  9:53am still b/p:

There's a graphic novel in that -- FDR and Fala and the Phantom Robes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

You will just have to do better, Alex. You can listen en route via the WFMU iPhone app OR you can go the molar-chip implantation route that WFMU is offering at a newly discounted rate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
Back in my publishing career days, the publisher I worked for received a book proposal for a oversize full-color coffee table book: "Dogs of the White House." It received SERIOUS consideration.
  10:00am ndbob:

@Doug Maybe I shouldn't mention it, but I probably would read that book
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Doug Schulkind:

I would have preferred "Dougs of the White House," but the marketing department didn't feel it would sell.
  10:02am ndbob:

Maybe King Timahoe will finally get treatment equal to Checkers
  10:02am Alex in Illinois:

I don't have an iPhone yet, so I am interested in the molar-chip implantation. Most of my teath are already partially made of artificial materials anyway, so I think there is already enough room in one of my molars if the ceramic filling is removed.
  10:03am marcury:

Good Morning all!
  10:05am still b/p:

I want to see the photo of LBJ lifting you by the ears!
  10:05am erella inToronto:

Good day Doug. Loving your show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

Oh hey erella! So glad you're along for the ride. You can roll down the window all the way if you want.

@still b/p
I would rather LBJ's biographer, Robert Caro (my hero) lift me by the ears.
  10:11am Jeff G:

@Doug: one of my proudest publishing moments -- shepherding BARKITECTURE into the world. Look it up. Ok, back to regretting EVERYTHING I'VE EVER DONE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff G
I am set to credit and thank you for turning me onto the final song in this set.
  10:14am jill:

Good morning Drummer etal. I hope I'm not late...
  10:14am hack_daniels:

Hello, Doug. (I listen every Friday but am far too shy for the comments). *pops cherry*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

Whether you're late or not is between you and your ears, Jill. I'm just glad you're here.

@hack_daniels
All are welcome! All are friends here. Blibber blabber to your heart's content. (If you are mocked, you will be mocked with love.)
  10:17am northguineahills:

I could use some Jack DeJohnette about right now.
  10:19am ?:

I was just going to say, "This doesn't sound like Coleman Hawkins"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

@?
We've transitioned from Coleman Hawkins over to Arthur Blythe (on alto) and David Murray (on tenor/bass clarinet)
  10:21am hack_daniels:

This J dJ is so good it's making me forget his Isle of Wight perm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Doug Schulkind:

Listener Mel, Coleman Hawkin's son-in-law, told me in an email that when Hawkin's died, people going through his personal effects discovered that he had a ton of European turntables and other high-end audio equipment.

Knowing that makes me happy.
  10:22am Jeff G:

@Doug: Well, there's one thing I don't regret, then. Btw, how's your spleen? My pituitary gland says, "hi."
  10:28am ?:

was hoping for a full set of Coleman, but am pleasantly surprised by this Palle Mikkelborg character, and just plain surprised when I saw the recording date
  10:28am Listener Gregory:

That Jack DeJohnette album was a real bright spot in a dark period for jazz. I really don't understand why he didn't keep that group together for some time. Was there not enough work for it? Was Jack not interested in being a leader? It's a bit frustrating, when I think of all the great music they could have put out.
  10:28am Matt from Springfield:

I don't understand the Happy Mondays. Now, those Happy Fridays I totally get!

Happy Friday, Doug and all Drummers!
  10:30am ?:

@ Gregory:
was '79 the same period as the New Directions group with Lester Bowie? Was Jack not leading that group?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff G
Spleen and not heard.

@Listener Gregory
Surely Arthur Blythe and David Murray were aching to get out from under being sidemen. Judging by their prolific recording under their own names (Murray especially), I'd guess that was the reason. I entirely agree with you on the vitality of the Special Edition band.
  10:32am Matt from Springfield:

Hello, Jeff G and spleen!
  10:32am Matt from Springfield:

This is a Far Out set! Is there a theme to this one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

@Matt from Springfield
You are always welcome here, Sir. We are out of propeller beanies, but there's Davy Boone cap that is unclaimed. It's all yours.
  10:34am Jeff G:

'llo, 'llo, Matt! If you could only spleen what I hear...
  10:35am Outlander:

Hello Doug and everyone,
just managed to turn on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Doug Schulkind:

@Outlander
Good greetings to you!
  10:38am Matt from Springfield:

Between Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett, I suppose? ;) I used to have a coonskin cap from an early Halloween that I liked playing with throughout my childhood. My fave part was the tail, obviously!

(Psst! Doug! The first set, album column, says "Rare Mexican CutsfFrom the Sixties". Typo! Ninja copy edit it, and no one will notice!)
  10:38am Outlander:

this track very reminiscent of Agharta/Pangea Miles period!!
  10:42am ndbob:

@Doug.... scrolling back.. I read the latest volume of Caro's LBJ biography - really great- haven't read the others though
  10:44am D:O:

And we thrilled to be here, Doug! (& happy belated bday, Bud.)
  10:44am holland oats:

with you as always drumma!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

Happy you're here, Holland!
  10:48am Hugo:

Jack DeJohnette will be playing in town later today. I'll be there.
  10:49am Matt from Springfield:

Thanks D:O for that last track! All the way through to the Bud Powell bed music, a great set!

I have listened to a couple D:O Archives, so just wanted to say y'all are doing a great job! There was one this week to listen to, but maybe I'll try to listen live next time!
  10:50am AnotherPaul:

Doug, I listened to the archive of your Faubus show and wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed it. I never knew the story behind the Mingus tune and certainly had not heard the lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

@Outlander
Not sure what record you were referring to, but by happenstance, Palle Mikkelborg produced Miles Davis's LP "Aura" from the late '80s.

@ndbob
The first Caro volume on LBJ I read was #3. Then I went back and read 1 and 2, then 3 again. Then I read Caro's book on Robert Moses, "The Power Broker." Volume 4 of the LBJ did NOT disappoint, despite the 12-year wait!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

All hail Hugo!
  10:52am Matt from Springfield:

Thai old-timey country and yodelin'! Korp khun krap, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

@Another Paul
Glad you dug it!
  10:55am marcury:

WoW!
  10:55am Hugo:

The line-up of the current JackDeJohnette Group:

JACK DEJOHNETTE drums RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA altsax DAVID FIUCZYNSKI guitar GEORGE COLLIGAN keyboards JEROME HARRIS bass
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

The fellas playing that ginormous bamboo gamelan gracing today's playlist? Coming up next after this 7+ minute song by Hanny H.R.

@Marcury!
  10:57am Alex in Illinois:

Thanks for the Khaen music! That was some of the hotest Khaen playing I've heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

The only thing I've uncovered so far in about 12 seconds of Googling on Teagle Fleming is this sentence from the Wikipedia page for the Ray Charles record "Ray Charles In Person":

"The track "Yes, Indeed" was recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival on July 5, 1958, with Lee Harper replacing John Hunt on trumpet and Richie Goldberg replacing Teagle Fleming on drums."
  10:58am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Copy edit, Miguel Angel, album column! We know how vigiliant you like to be on those! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex
Khaen was able.
  11:01am Hugo:

Is that from the Khon Kaen area, that is Northeast Thailand - Isan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

@Hugo
Yes, the khaen player is from Mahasarakham Province in Isan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

Turn this bad boy UP LOUD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

I still maintain that I am a freaking chicken for not playing the 34-minute track on this album.
  11:07am Matt from Springfield:

Beat them stalks!
  11:10am Hugo:

Mahasarakham is next to Khon Kaen. I've been briefly to the town of Khon Kaen, not to the other province. Love the Jegog of Negara! This is from Bali, I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

Right again, Hugo. (I know. I sound redundant.)
  11:11am seang:

bamboozled
  11:12am Carmichael:

For some reason, I think of Zamfir when looking at the pic. Good morning Doug and Dougvotees.
  11:13am Matt from Springfield:

YES seang! :)
  11:18am Matt from Springfield:

Good morning Carm! Dougvotees, there's another winner!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome welcome seang and Carmichael. And what the hell, welcome to you, too, Zamfir.
  11:20am northguineahills:

Well, Fairport puts a smile on my face, as the all of the music this morning....
  11:20am Matt from Springfield:

Fairport rarities, nice treat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

@Matt from S
Thanks for the typo patrol!
  11:21am Brian in UK:

I remember seeing 'An American Friend' by Wim Wenders. At the begining Dennis Hopper, the Ripley character starts singing the first verse of Easy Rider somewhere in Hamburg. Love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

L-O-V-E that movie, Brian.
  11:23am Carmichael:

Although this song appears on (guitar, vocal), it was actually an outtake from the Liege & Lief sessions.
  11:24am ndbob:

I saw it when I took a class on Wenders
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

@Carmichael
You are correct, Sir! (insert Ed McMahon guffaw here.)
  11:25am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: And none's the wiser! ;)

Lonesome Sisters, this is NEW folk! I'm liking them!
  11:26am Jeff G:

The Ex do a crazy/creepy version of House Carpenter.
  11:26am Brian in UK:

It had nothing to do with the film. I guess Wenders had the chance to do it so he took it. Looking up to heroes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

More NEW coming up.
  11:26am holland oats:

american friend is one of my faves - bruno ganz! nicholas ray!
  11:31am Brian in UK:

The begining of 'Kings of the Road' where the guy drives his car into the Rhine whilst the other protagonist is waking up & shaving gets your attention.
  11:34am Brian in UK:

Gotta cut & run. Great job as ever Doug.
  11:34am ndbob:

I heard "Just Like Eddie" for the first time when I aw "Kings of the Road".... but "Paris, Texas" is my favorite Wenders film
  11:34am marcury:

Perfect song for the end of my stay!
  11:35am northguineahills:

New Beth Orton, interesting...
  11:35am duke:

Beth Orton oh yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

Great hanging with you, Marcury. I miss you, pal.
  11:37am marcury:

Miss you Too!
  11:37am duke:

Th trouble with this show is that I always hear a bunch of artists that I want to look up and listen to but forget to do it after the show.
  11:40am Matt from Springfield:

Much great NEW! Meg and Beth I know of, but Lavender Diamond I need to check out! Great vocals, great production.
  11:40am northguineahills:

Sounded like Lavender Diamond, over the top, but in a pleasing way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Doug Schulkind:

@Duke
Sorry. I'll try to do better.
  11:43am Carmichael:

My favorite Wenders film (today, anyway) is Until the End of the World.
  11:47am Matt from Springfield:

Soul deep cut! Technical KO selection!
  11:47am Licensed Mariachi Inspector:

APPROVED.
  11:49am Matt from Springfield:

@Duke, Doug: Once the FMU microchip transmitter v. 5 comes out, it will create a list of all artists you like and want to look up, and then keep them in your queue until you've investigated them!
  11:51am duke:

I'm waiting for the new WFMU brain implant
  11:52am ndbob:

ah Levi's brother here
  11:52am Hugo:

Mine is "Der Himmel über Berlin".
  11:56am Matt from Springfield:

Wow, really Levi St's brother?? Talented family.

The outdoor pools may be closed until next May, but the deep end of Soul cuts is open and going strong at GTDS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

@Licensed Mariachi Inspector
I think you might like this GTDS show from last year:

wfmu.org...
  11:59am Matt from Springfield:

The Devil's always busy...

"If you love Achi so much, why don't you Mari it?" Excellente!
  12:00pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
  12:01pm duke:

Thanks for another great show Doug
  12:01pm Licensed Mariachi Inspector:

Bueno! Grassy ass!

It has been a singular BLAST everyone. So glad we all did this together.
  12:01pm seang:

thanks Doug
  12:01pm Matt from Springfield:

Another amazing, lively, enjoyable show!

Oh Doug, I'm gonna need this Daniel Boone hat over the weekend, so I'll sign out for it and return it to the Hat Rack on Tuesday.
  12:01pm Jeff G:

Wooooooooo-OOOOOH!! Amazinating show, Doug.
  12:02pm Carmichael:

Thanks Doug!
  12:03pm Matt from Springfield:

Likewise, glad we did this all together!
Thanks Doug! Let this be the wonderful start to a wonderful weekend! Take care everyone!
  12:27pm chris in durban in jakarta:

sorry I missed the show doug - time zone difference in Indonesia threw me out - best wishes - Chris
  12:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Chris! You will appreciate the cover art (above) and the Indonesian set, especially!
  5:17pm kat330:

@Doug (@9:55a): I've nothing pithy to thay, but how provident the FMU microchip transmitter v. 5 is currently on sale! After surviving six decades without a single tooth cavity to be drilled and filled, I recently endured a "very unlucky" (dentist's own words) bite-down angle on a not thoroughly cracked peppercorn resulting in a most thoroughly cracked molar. This, in turn, is leading to a root canal week after next (is it as gruesome as it sounds?!). So I'll just purchase the FMU chip and have my torturer, er endodontist, toss it into my new canal for some roots music I can really sink my teeth into.

Now regarding today's bang-up shoots music: *Thank you*, Douglas, for getting me Bali high enough to jegog my memory, which I can no longer gamelan these daze. And I discovered a side benefit to delayed gratification is having a communally proofread and auto-corrected version of your already topnotch playlist. :) Have a wonderful weekend, Drummer!
  5:20pm kat330:

(O, BTW, there *is* a vowel in the band name Los Strwck ;)
  5:28pm Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
