@Joe: You included a tribute to your own dog less than a year ago--am I correct to assume the theme is "the DOG days of summer"? :)

And hi slugluv!

12539:

It's hot enough that I wouldn't be surprised to see the Devil around here.

Sounds like the chords to "Big Rock Candy Mountain" in a different rhythm. Similar vocal delivery to Harry McClintock too.

Anybody ever seen "The Party"? Some people have mixed feelings about Peter Sellers' performance in that one.
  12:35am
Matt from Springfield:

BWHOA!! America's own classic composer Mancini! He must've got together with some hippy dudes to do this soundtrack!

"The Party": with Peter Sellers as an Indian guest at a high society party. I remember seeing that on TV.
  12:36am
KP:

Im in Alexandria.
  12:36am
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Wasn't typically great Sellers, but I suppose it works as a period comedy piece, focusing on the archetypes of the counterculture era.

I had so many diet cokes at game I will never sleep again.

@Joe: My ethnic food radar is on: I finally tried Ethiopian cuisine a few weeks ago. There's actually a small "Little Ethiopia" in Annandale! And just tonight, I checked out an Ethiopian restaurant in downtown Springfield: it checks out as good! And much closer to me! They've always been concentrated on U Street, way in the middle of DC, so glad some are starting to move out my way.
  12:45am
j-No:

Peter Sellers best work, aside from Dr. Strangelove (which Dan Blocker was asked to be in) was on The Goon Show.

I'd love to check out the orig Goon Show, it sounds so great!

(oh right, we haven't perfected the WFMU-Playlist-Foodshare device yet...)
  12:54am
j-No:

I always take along the plastic utensils from Chinese takeout, that I never use otherwise, when I go to an Ethiopian restaurant. The feel of some of the food reminds me too much of old timey Halloween haunted house tricks where they stuck your hand in a bowl of goop and said it was your dog's brains that they just killed.

From Ewan MacColl, to Roberta Flack, to Flaming Lips/Erykah Badu, this one just keeps getting better.

Borscht Belt misfire:

"My sister's so fat, she guzzles pills...even though she KNOWS they're placebos!"
  1:20am
j-No:

Yeah, back in the day, Dave was not really into it, and then Donovan spent a couple decades trying to get away from it, so I kind of discounted them. Ringo has never given up on P&L, man.
  1:21am
Julie:

Dave & Donovan. I have nothing to contribute, just a happy smile
  1:21am
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: The National Examiner is the even more whacky pub of the Enquirer family. I've noticed that in recent years, Star has switched to nice laminated paper, and tries to sell themselves up, to People or US Magazine territory. While the Globe seems to be selling themselves down towards the Examiner's level.
Avatar 1:23am
Joe McG:

Does the Weekly World News still exist? That was my favorite.
  1:23am
Matt from Springfield:

@j-No: I like Ringo's comment in the Beatles Anthology about premiering "All You Need Is Love" live during the Our World satellite broadcast. About how that was peace and love, as simple as it gets, and he was proud to be a part of that moment in '67.
  1:25am
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: The WWN had the spirit of the Onion, but a surrealistic veneer of the Examiner and cheaper B&W periodicals like. Sadly they stopped publishing print copies of that, but it lives on through the Web.
  1:26am
Matt from Springfield:

Btw, great stuff Joe! "The Lope Song" is a good candidate for bed music, methinks!

  1:36am
Matt from Springfield:

Single File is certainly the most distinctive part of the show, your own little unique thing!

Amanda Nazario sings along, Mary Wing plays records backwards, Irwin plays, uh, his newest "stars", and Joe McG plays the little records with the big holes!

Hey Julie, I know you've played Judie Tzuke a few times before, but I particularly liked the one you played this week, even if it was her "hit".

That song has great production too, a soft tinge like on Arista records in the late 70s.
Avatar 2:39am

Judie Tzuke is like the Katy Perry of the 70s! Too bad she was never in 3D.
  2:44am

Whoa, Meters cover of "Birds"!
Admittedly, the music sounds more upbeat, making this version less of a 'jerker than the original is.
