pedro:

hi dave, never heard your show, but i liked the "guaranteed less than 2% rock and roll". i hope you keep your promise!
  7:05pm
other david:

Evening Mr. Mandl - from another Dave M!
Avatar 7:07pm
Dave M:

@Pedro: I'll do my best. @OD: Welcome. Always good to have another Dave M around.
  7:08pm
miss cheri:

dave great to see you again!! btw i hope you still think that mila kunis is an icon?? and yes i still love mila!!! speaking of mila are you going to see the new movie "ted"? comes out july 13th,,,
Avatar 7:15pm
Dave M:

@Cheri: I just had dinner with her. She sends her love.
  7:16pm
frenchee:

Ha, I think Dave's already exceeded the 2 percent limit. Now, how about some disco? To fill in for Monica? Dave? Dave?
  7:18pm
miss cheri:

dave i just hope you're not joking,,
  7:20pm
other david:

Good lord - Cheri, as if,,
  7:21pm
pedro:

@frenchee: i agree, maybe the show needs some disco. but i was going to say that i like how mary halvorson's guitar playing is easily recognizable and at the same time her records are always surprising.
  7:22pm
other david:

This be awesome
  7:28pm
miss cheri:

dave,,if you really did have dinner with mila,, THAT would've been awsome,, but i know you're only kidding!!!
  7:28pm
?:

you are talking way too much
Avatar 7:29pm
Dave M:

@Frenchee: I'll see what I can do, but that ain't really my turf.
  7:30pm
Torbjørn:

Norway checking in, we very much approve of the pronunciation on "Hornorkesteret". Albums name is "feathers and iron", and tracks name is, uhm ,"dirty gallop". You know, that way horses have of running that will get them disqualified in a harness race.
Avatar 7:31pm
Dave M:

@Torbjørn: Thanks. Hello, Norway!
  7:34pm
frenchee:

NICE, Norway in the house!
  7:35pm
miss cheri:

dave...some advice please don't mess with a woman who idolizes a great celeb like mila.
Avatar 7:35pm
Dave M:

@Frenchee: This is as close as I dare to get to disco. Slow disco.
  7:38pm
12539:

Isn't Dinosaur L disco? not that I'm complaining about anything played so far.
Avatar 7:39pm
Dave M:

I think so. That's why I opened the show with it.
  7:43pm
miss cheri:

ohh dave did you catch last weeks episode of family guy??
Avatar 7:44pm
Dave M:

Nope. No TV in my house.
  7:45pm
Galganga:

Cool track!
  7:46pm
the glowing one:

her singing reminds me of the singer of Banco
  7:47pm
Galganga:

It is Jean Marc
Avatar 7:53pm
Dave M:

@Galganga: Thanks for confirming. Was pretty sure of his first name, but I don't always trust my memory.
  8:04pm
frenchee:

By jingo, you did it! Thanks for the Disco Dave Mandl style!
Avatar 8:07pm
Dave M:

@Frenchee: I'm always up for a challenge, I guess.
  8:08pm
miss cheri:

dave--i take it that you did'nt care about me commenting tonight,, huh dave?
  8:09pm
miss cheri:

night all!!
  8:10pm
Galganga:

I have heard this song somewhere before! I'm dying trying to remember where!
  8:10pm
dave:

i love this erdem helvacioglu piece. even the title is perfect.
Avatar 8:10pm
Dave M:

@Cheri: No, it's OK. Have a good night.
  8:13pm
dave:

also, there's a bird outside my window that seems to be singing along with the helvacioglu track.
Avatar 8:24pm
Dave M:

@dave: Happy to hear that. Maybe it's got a thing for Turkish music.
  8:26pm
dave:

if so, it's fairly parochial in its tastes. it seems to have quieted right down for this hungarian stuff.
Avatar 8:28pm
Dave M:

Philistine.
  8:28pm
dave:

indeed.
  8:31pm
other david:

A thing I'd like to see my neighbours do:

Chase birds away, shouting "philistine!" when they seem unmoved by Hungarian music on WFMU
  8:32pm
texas scott:

nice show,mister mandl.
  8:32pm
Jeff:

Unsurprisingly, a great show from Mr. Mandl. If we have to suffer the absence of our accustomed diva, it's good to know she continues to choose her fillers-in with the same unerring taste she exercises picking music.

Hey, that sort of skill would've been handy in the music biz back in the day, wouldn't it?
Avatar 8:34pm
Dave M:

Aw, thanks. Always a pleasure to fill in for Miss Monica.
  8:42pm
Jeff:

Now when I hear "My Sweet Lord", one of the things which usually comes to mind is the harmonies in the Girlyman version (!).
  8:45pm
trish:

Great fill in, Dave.
  8:45pm
domenic M:

Nice to hear your show tonight Dave
  8:48pm
sinister dexter:

diggin the show ... greetings from michigan

"Verfremdungseffekt" is actually a term used in theater:

Avatar 8:51pm

Thanks. Showing my ignorance of theater, obviously.
  8:51pm
other david:

Great show & hope to hear you on the air again soon - thanks Dave.
  8:52pm
12539:

It's a big world out there.

Nice fill-in.
Avatar 8:54pm
Dave M:

Thanks. I've got a bunch of fill-ins coming up in the next few weeks. Watch the main FMU web page, I guess. Or my Twitter feed: @dmandl
  8:56pm
Jeff:

Oh, and the subject of Hungarian music and language puts me in mind of Gábor Gadó, and especially the sort-of-whispery spoken intro to "Szeretném bejárni a földet" from Modern Dances for the Advanced in Age.

The spoken part has a sort of incantational quality, a spell could be being cast... (well, it could be anything, since I don't understand a syllable of Hungarian) and then... off the song goes into a little jazzy something.

I figured WFMU folk would be all over it, since *someone* at the station always turns out to have been all over anything musical you ever run across, but I haven't found this in the playlist-searching gizmo. Although I'm probably just not entering the right search incantation.
  8:56pm
Galganga:

Really enjoyed this set, thanks Dave!
Avatar 8:57pm
Dave M:

Thanks, folks. This will probably be the last cut...
