  12:19pm
dave:

  12:31pm
MD...AKA:A GUY WHO KNOWS MORSE...:

SIESI...
Avatar 12:34pm
Dave M:

Thanks, Jack. Not sure. I might be back with a regular show when the summer schedule starts (sometime in May).
  12:34pm
tim from champaign:

I picked up the Van der Graaf Generator "H is To..." reissue LP last weekend because of the jam you played off of it last week. Thanks!
Avatar 12:35pm
Dave M:

"Siesi"? Thanks. Still a mystery, I guess. Is it Italian?
Avatar 12:35pm
Dave M:

Cool, Tim. Hope you liked it.
  12:38pm
tim from champaign:

I did! It was a missing link in my record collection.
  12:43pm
miss cheri:

i'm sorry dave but i don't think only one mention of mila is enough per show after all she is what's happening now,,i hope you understand,,
Avatar 12:44pm
Dave M:

Whatever makes you happy, Cheri.
  12:48pm
Mike East:

Are Pretty Things actually Badfinger?
Avatar 12:50pm
Dave M:

Not as far as I know. I think a bunch of Badfinger members were no longer with us when that song was recorded.
  12:50pm
miss cheri:

so dave how was your holiday weekend??
  12:51pm
Mike East:

hehe. I was jes kidding. Sonically very similar. Not a bad thing.

  1:05pm
Brendan:

Thanks for playing Sadistic Mika Band. Of course, WFMU is the ONLY place I would expect to hear it, outside of my own record collection.
  1:06pm
spazioli:

just tuned in, and overheard the bit about really odd time signatures... but didn't catch which song was being referenced. help me out?
Avatar 1:07pm
Dave M:

Yeah, they're only considered Classic Rock here at FMU.
Avatar 1:08pm
Dave M:

I was talking about Red. At the beginning, they do three measures of 5/4, and another that sounds like it's going to be 5/4 but is actually 6/4.
Avatar 1:09pm
Dave M:

It's subtle but really brilliant. Definitely intended to trick your ear.
  1:09pm
Steve:

Alright David!
  1:09pm
spazioli:

thanks dave! i'll listen to it carefully after the show :-)
Avatar 1:10pm
Dave M:

OK. It's the intro, at the very beginning of the song ("Red").
  1:12pm
Steve:

Hey bass player!
Avatar 1:13pm
Dave M:

Former bass player, unfortunately.
  1:15pm
KevinfromBayRidge:

Good Day one & all,
I guess the "M" in FMU stands for Mandl this last week!
Great to have such a fine and upstanding native Brooklynite doing the fill-in role proud.
Avatar 1:16pm
Dave M:

Thanks Kevin. Hello, Bay Ridge!
  1:17pm
BSI:

This is brilliant as heck.
  1:23pm
Uncle Dracula:

Great set Dave, wish you had a show on regularly!
Avatar 1:26pm
Dave M:

Thanks thanks.
  1:27pm
Listener Jimbo:

Deep Purple sticks it to the man!
  1:27pm
bruceleh:

What's the issue with playing the Deep Purple? Bootlegs verboten?
  1:28pm
dc pat:

man, can't listen to Deep Purple without thinking of Jesus H. Christ anymore.
  1:28pm
Steve:

Does Ian Paice have a grammy, oscar, medal of freedom?
  1:28pm
bruceleh:

Or is the problem exceeding your 2% rock'n'roll content?
Avatar 1:29pm
Dave M:

No, it's more like *nine minutes* of Deep Purple.
  1:30pm
bruceleh:

LOL!
Avatar 1:30pm
Dave M:

This band completely kicked butt. Yes, Ian Paice, great drummer. Ian Gillan was also a great singer.
  1:31pm
KevinfromBayRidge:

Don't worry Dave. The POP music Police will give you pass and rack it up to the "ironic" category! But don't expect any pay raises soon!
  1:32pm
dc pat:

JEEZE, isn't there ANYbody in Deep Purple NOT named Ian??
  1:33pm
Listener Jimbo:

Surprising how much I remember of this from listening to MIJ in the '70s.
Avatar 1:33pm
Dave M:

Not ironic!
  1:35pm
Steve:

Something Plant could never do
  1:36pm
KevinfromBayRidge:

OOPS. I forgot that you're not played it @16rpms!
  1:37pm
chris:

I'm not sure the FMU executive team could fire someone who plays Keiji Haino. Even if the preceeding track was Deep Purple. We've got your back. Awesome set.
  1:37pm
Steve:

Made in Japan also
Avatar 1:38pm
Dave M:

Appreciate it, Chris.
  1:48pm
Jim:

Just surfed in. I see that Red is on the playlist. The Red album is Allmusic.com's album of the day today.
  1:51pm
dale:

i have some harvest stuff - third ear band and albion band. for the life of me i can't recall what any of it sounds like. maybe ashley hutchens was in albion band.
  1:51pm
dc pat:

DEVO!!
Avatar 1:52pm
Dave M:

@Jim: Is that true?????
  1:53pm
Jennique:

Devo is one of my all-time favorite bands and I'm happy you're playing them. Their music still holds up to today, in my book. LOVELOVELOVE that Diane named her cats Mr. Kamikazi and Mr. DNA. Brilliant.
  1:54pm
r i s k y:

Blockhead!
  1:54pm
Listener Jimbo:

Bob 1 at his finest on this record.
  1:56pm
dc pat:

Devo is still ahead of their time. Bob I rules.
  1:56pm
Dan from Toronto:

I dunno I kinda like it like this...
  1:56pm
Jim:

Dave, if you go to allmusic.com, you will see Red at the top of the home page.
  1:56pm
dc pat:

it's funny too that every true punk rocker I know always lists Devo as one of their faves.
Avatar 1:57pm
Dave M:

@Jim: Whoa, you're right.
  1:57pm
Dan from Toronto:

Devo mashed up with Yasunao Tone... kinda nice...
  1:58pm
ifny:

whoa, the suspense! is it supposed to do that or not? wait, does it matter? like an ugly child, i love it anyway.
  1:59pm
Jim:

Why would I lie?
Avatar 2:00pm
Dave M:

It's just an amazing coincidence.
  2:20pm
dc pat:

isn't it 6/4?
Avatar 2:22pm
Dave M:

Blockhead? No, definitely 11.
Avatar 2:26pm
Dave M:

You can count it as 4 + 3 + 4.
  2:29pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

My only comment is this is fabulous. Oh, and I just saw Tim Hecker perfom in a chapel in Oberlin!
Avatar 2:30pm
Dave M:

Sounds great. I've never seen him live.
  2:47pm
Jim:

This reminds me of the League of Crafty Guitarists.
  2:48pm
dc pat:

11/8, shit you're right, had to listen to it again. Way more complicated than I thought.
  2:48pm
Listening Out There:

...Glad to see you're subbing again, Mr. Mandl (no "e")...
Avatar 2:49pm
Dave M:

Thanks, LOT.
