A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Listener comments!

  9:04am
trouble:

good grey green tuesday!
  9:05am
jamesie:

Good morning Balthus lovers everywhere!
  9:07am
the glowing one:

good day, what's that picture supposed to mean, and what's that music supposed to mean?
  9:07am
ffrr:

Good morning and happy birthday St. Nicholas & Dave Brubeck.
  9:07am
Nathan:

I thought this was a track from Terry Riley's Shri Camel...
  9:12am
trouble:

meaning?....hmmm
  9:14am
jamesie:

how unaware we are interelating with each other however close the proximity? Surrealist landscape ... bla blather. The mountain
  9:16am
seang:

check out that figure on the upper right mountain
  9:21am
trouble:

the composition is amazing, the colors are stunning and yes, none of the humans are interacting with each other! metaphor for our modern day? the artist is Balthus, one wackadoodle artist dude, love his work despite the personality that created it.
  9:23am
Snortley:

Balthus lovers? Where? If he had had a lover, maybe he would have painted differently!
  9:26am
Josh:

Wonder who's playing conga on this carol king tune. I wonder if she's singing about Canaan, CT in the Berkshires.
  9:26am
Josh:

Sorry for the multiple posts. Darn iPhone app. Slow to respond. Maybe Trouble can edit the listener comments?
  9:27am
Elisabeth:

what was that song you just played that sounded like Darkel? I was in the car and now rushing to school.
  9:34am
Lucky:

Beautiful first set. Unbelievably great.
  9:36am
trouble:

done josh, no biggie. elisabeth are you talking about the donna regina perhaps?
  9:37am

must be a 1975 vinyl :D
Cheers from Italy!
  9:39am
Jennique:

Morning Trouble! Stunning painting. Impressions of things I like in it: the sharp diagonal across the skirt, rock formation next to man in red looks like a man itself, faces in the rocks, twisted wrist of man with pipe, reclining woman's legs look artificial - perhaps stricken with polio, and lastly what is the couple pointing at?
  9:40am
Lewis:

Love! the painting at the head of the playlist - can't remember much about it, but saw a show by the painter at the met long ago....
  9:42am
Lucky:

Jennique! There is a lot to look at and now you've given me more. Hope your car is OK.
  9:43am
pierre:

Bonjour Trouble !
  9:44am
trouble:

buon giorno luciano! led zeppelin on vinyl, of course!!
  9:44am
jamesie:

Hi Lucky - Thelonius
  9:45am
trouble:

howdy jennique! balthus and girls legs....o yes, always odd
  9:47am
trouble:

good afternoon jamesie!
  9:47am
Lewis:

as I recall some of his other paintings are disturbingly odd, which is probably shy I like them...
  9:48am
Jennique:

Thanks for putting the name of the artist up there. Did a quick search of Balthus and never realized I own a t-shirt with one of his paintings on it:

  9:48am
Lucky:

Awesome segue (sp?). Hi Jamesie!
  9:49am
glenn:

a/ the guy in the front is looking for d.b. cooper.
b/ the woman in gray is doing her sun salutations.
c/ the woman on the ground is wishing she'd worn flats.
d/ the guy or girl in the back ( i can't tell) just wants the picnic he or she was promised.
  9:50am
jamesie:

wotcher mates
  9:55am
Brian in UK:

Hello trouble. Like the background, kind of compliments the pictures. Some picture frames in galleries are so florid & unsympathetic to the picture.
  9:55am
JT:

morning, Amy Camus
  9:57am
Jennique:

Lucky, Agnes the car is running and still leaking I suppose. I looked under it when parked on the street and no large puddles of oil were there. All parties are aware of the situation. Agnes will get a tuneup this week, I'm pretty sure.
  10:01am
Lucas:

Hi, I came just to say this is beautiful. Thanks Trouble. Bye.
  10:01am
glenn:

you might want to check and make sure there's still oil in the motor, i'm thinkin'
  10:02am
jamesie:

daydream = superb. Staring at The Mountain.
  10:02am
glenn:

because, if you're leaking that much, you might need something more than a tuneup, as in a head gasket or such.
  10:02am
trouble:

thanks lucas! bye
  10:02am
trouble:

helloe brian in the UK
  10:06am
SueA:

What Would Kenny G Do?
Play that song for 3 hours.
  10:07am
the glowing one:

the facebook virus has spread a little more and claimed another victim
  10:07am
SueA:

@glenn: what about the couple in the distance?
  10:09am
Jennique:

Glenn - you are right. Agnes is an old car, circa 1989. Many of her parts need a-fixin'.
  10:11am
JT:

The couple in the distance are looking at an image of the Virgin Mary that has appeared in the rock face.
  10:11am
glenn:

the couple in the distance are mechanics waiting for jennique to bring agnes in for repairs.
  10:12am
trouble:

it's true the glowing one, i do fell like i've been infected. but i succembed as a way for peeps to conncet good reads, songs, things to do , recipes etc....any old fab thing that peeps want to share. only fab of course, no sour tarts encouraged.
  10:12am
glenn:

or what jt said.
  10:13am
jamesie:

The guy in the foreground just spoken on his mobile to the garage, heard it was a crankshaft oil seal beariing and $1200 labour. *really pissed*
  10:13am
Jennique:

The couple are looking at Agnes crashed at the bottom of the canyon after Jennique pushed it over the edge.
  10:16am
Adrian in London:

What a verdant-coloured playlist this week. This Balthus would make a good jigsaw puzzle (he said, loweing the tone).
  10:16am
bitter bassist:

...is trying to remember which band posed for a pic that mimicked the painting on today's column...
  10:16am
bitter bassist:

column, playlist, whatever
  10:18am
Jennique:

Bow Wow Wow posed after a Manet painting, Dejeuner sur l'herbe.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bowwowwow_seejungle.jpg
  10:19am
jamesie:

also that was on Lowell George Album complete with Bob DYlan , Fidel in painting
  10:20am

  10:23am
Angela:

  10:25am
bitter bassist:

I think the pic I'm remembering was a from an 80s NME article featuring the Cocteau Twins, posed as the three in the foreground
  10:25am

  10:41am
jamesie:

I was warned you get food poisioning from that cafe round the corner from the station. Its got great venerable waitresses there who look cross but are really lovely. Is it still there?

Working from home today, so I can't stream WFMU without major impact on remote desktop usability. Listening to WFMU on the air, in Brooklyn, lots of static, but a bad WFMU signal is still a treasure!

I'm hoping for a Slayer Christmas album this year.

  11:05am
Caryn:

The couple in the back is arguing over a rock formation previously painted by Georgia O'Keeffe. "Does it really look like a vagina or not?" seems to be the main point of debate.

still b/p:

Is anyone else getting the occasional small sharp digi-garble sneezes that last just a fraction of a second? I've had the condition for weeks now -- 128mp3 stream on Real Player. It's never enough to disrupt the music, but it's odd. A voodoo revenge spell...?
  11:26am
Lewis:

@ still b/p - I think I have experienced that. I have also lost the scroll on the iTunes mini player (but that could be a configuration problem on my end...)
  11:28am
pierre:

@still b/p: i do have that sometime, on rare occasion, maybe once or twice a day on a 24h/24 wfmu day.

On the other hand, when i listen to the archives (take Scott William's one for example) i always end hearing the four or five first songs, then… nothing. How come? Does somebody know?
  11:28am
hamburger:

just poppin' by to say how awesome this woom track is.. okay toodles!

still b/p:

No, pierre -- I don't think my archive swims have ever gone dry early, but it's a question you can put to FMU's Stream Team via email.
  11:41am
Cecile:

maja, you made my day. That is amazing.
  11:44am
Angela:

Pierre! I had that problem too with some of Trouble's shows! The stream stopped after a few tracks! I listen to the archives on the pop-up player. I wrote to the stream team and told them which shows were messed up and they fixed them right away! I was impressed.
  11:47am
maja:

ah cecile you saw it ! yes big fun
  11:50am
pierre:

@ Angela : well, allright, this is very helpful. I'll do that.
Merci beaucoup!
