Some passages in that last instrumental tune reminded me that some nationwide non-FMU all-night show was using a Jeff Beck tribute CD to the late Les Paul as bumper music a few nights ago. Released 22 Feb. Strike while the iron's hot, Jeff!
  3:16pm
yair yona:

@Matt, sorry to be disappointing. man AND non-spy? what's the use of being here ;)

Shodder Grayson--you're reaching into the Heavies today, Irwin! What's the story with Shodder? Was this a found tape? I've found no other refs to him on the interwebs, besides FMU.
  3:35pm
Jandek:

Now this is more like it. Al's a piker.
  3:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

LOL Jandek!
  3:39pm

Shodder Grayson strikes me as a more strident Kadaffi, set to music.
  3:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

I've known the Goosey Goosey Gander verse since I found it in the "violent nursery rhymes" section of Bartlett's Quotations--didn't have a tune to go with it until now.

Matt from Springfield:

"Irwin on WFMU--the man who alternately rubs glass shards and balm into listeners' eardrums."
  3:42pm
It's accordiON:

Mildred's got a squeezebox
she wears on her chest,
and it pinches her chin,
keeps her low back compressed,
But her bellows pump flame,
And Myron Floren eats shame...
  3:43pm
northguineahills:

Swan Dive sounds like an updated Randy Newman.....

  4:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

And to think that "Honey Bee" is such a rap star, while Max Rubin languishes in obscurity. Where's the justice in the music industry?

Music Political Officer:

Comrade Irwin,
Your playlist today has been judged by the Supreme Council to be MUSICALLY INCORRECT. You have been sentenced in absentia to permanent exile at WFMU without pay.

Oh shit, we already DID that 37 years ago! There's no stopping this freeform-ist monster!!
  4:26pm
Mommy and Daddy:

Okay, we'll give you your allowance.
BUT, you promised that you'd get plastered and raid circus world. And I want to see your DJ premiums finished and on the table before you go out.
  4:27pm

I love T Rex!
  4:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

What year was this Mescaleros project of Joe's?
  4:35pm

  4:39pm
Happy Listener:

I love the loose thread connecting these sets.
  4:40pm
JCJ:

Mescaleros were started, as I recall, in 1999 and pretty much ended with Strummer's death in 2002. This album, though, was in the works at the time so was completed after he had died and released in 2003.
  4:41pm
Marmalade kitty:

@MattSF StreetCore relaeased posthumously 1993
  4:43pm

  4:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

AMANDA!! Metropolitan Mama!
  4:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

Anyone know what song's in the background of this one?
  4:50pm
Lizardner Dave:

Someone should do a mashup of Amanda with Kenny G & Irwin Behaving Horribly. It would be a dream come true. Or the universe would end. Either way, what fun!
  4:50pm
Robert:

I'm guessing there was just a brief period in her life when her voice was like that, poor thing.
  4:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Dave: If we're going out, might as well be while we're on top! What ecstasy!
  4:55pm
Marmalade kitty:

How old was Amanda when she recorded in -'87 was it..?
There's reference to a Swedish singer profesionaly known as Amanda also
  4:56pm
Marmalade kitty:

On wiki!
  4:59pm

  5:04pm
Happy Listener:

bono really makes this song. bad.
  5:05pm

Maybe Leonard should have joined Bono and the Edge for the Spiderman musical, too. Couldn't hoit.
  5:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Smoooooth Miles. Loving it.
  5:14pm
Happy Listener:

@still b/p: That would put him 100 floors below Hank Williams, Jr.
  5:25pm
Jazz Aficionado:

B-b-but, of COURSE Miles was on trumpet! But who were the personnel on the rest of the instruments?! I gotta know!!!!
  5:25pm
Marmalade kitty:

U2 UK..? nononononon no Eire!
  5:25pm

  5:25pm
northguineahills:

Yeah, what Marmalade kitty said.
  5:25pm
PMD:

That one person is Beth?
  5:25pm
U2:

we're always eerie.
  5:28pm
Happy Listener:

Please don't mistake my comments for complaints, Irwin! I'm quite happy that you're consistently dishing up what I'm not expecting (except for Amanda, that's well-worn), and you haven't played anything I'd consider tuning out.
  5:30pm
Happy Listener:

Actually, you haven't played anything I'd consider tuning out for nearly 12 years.
  5:31pm
Tuner:

Hands off, Happy L.

  5:50pm
Robert:

This is the longest commercial I've ever heard on WFMU.
  5:51pm
Marmalade kitty:

.but nod anymoah!
  5:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Robert: Unless you count Kenny G reading advertisements, deadpan, into the mike for 3 hours. Or anything really, for 3 hours.
  5:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

LOL! Tomorrow Never Knows!
  5:54pm
Robert:

I don't think even Kenny G. resorted to reading just a SINGLE ad this long.
  5:54pm
Mike East:

Laura L - I was thinking that!
  5:54pm
Happy Listener:

@Laura: Yeah, I was thinking Joe Frank, too.
  5:55pm
Robert:

I hope Dr. Kurtz donates next week.
  5:56pm
Brainiac:

Is this fellow interviewing himself? 'Cause I do that too, only it's more redundant.
  5:56pm
Happy Listener:

It's a bit resonant, too. I'm from an Irish Catholic Alcoholic background, too... but my sexual ability's fine.
  5:57pm
Robert:

Hey wait...are these the same at different speeds, or are these demo tapes from different people practicing for voice work?
