A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I used to dig the Plastic Bertrand version of this song back in the late 70s. WNEW played it all the time.

Dum Dum -'remember NEW playing sexpistols, then Devo, then n advert for the US army?!..and the morning guy(Dennis Elsis?) playing"Oliver's army"by Elvis Costello, then saying"I dont know what he's so angry about."!...'Remember WPIX? -True punks...for minute..then,"Love songs...Nothing -but Love songs"..(that's when WFMU became my only.)
  10:20am
dragonflyshards:

(p.s.)Hi,Trouble! Thank you for the Anne Hutchenson moment.
  10:22am
trouble:

hi there, and your welcome.
  10:24am
Carmichael:

Good morning Trouble and fellow Audiophiles.
  10:26am
Dum Dum Guy at the Gates of Dawn:

dragonflyshards - WPIX was all over the map, from what I remember - but not in a good way. I have a stronger memory of Dave Herman as the WNEW morning jock. As for when WNEW jumped the shark, I more or less started to drift away after Alison Steele left.
  10:29am
Parq:

Dragon, I always thought that PIX was way-overrated. They played only the biggest hits by the most mainstream punk-and-new-wave, and their attitude of self-congratulation got on my nerves. But I agree with you about 'NEW, which sought out anything at all that they could play in order to avoid playing even the most accessible punk-and-new-wave. For me the last straw was when 'NEW began running a TV commercial with a naked blonde announcing "I've got nothing on at all -- except WNEW where Rock Lives!" Clearchannel itself couldn't do better.
  10:33am
annie:

it was a sad day for me when whfs out of bethesda stopped their free-form style. lost of pissed off deejays that day
  10:38am
Dum Dum Guy at the Gates of Dawn:

Annie - Tell me about it. DC has no real college radio to speak of so when WHFS bit the dust, there was not much pickins left. This was before satellite and internet radio. The local Pacifica station, WPFW, was the only thing I could listen to. Oh, also bluegrass on WAMU, that they have since booted in favor of talk. Sigh....
  10:39am
dragonflyshards:

-AtTheGatesOfDawn -i think it was Dave Herman...(PIX)-When i say"minute",it really was just a couple months...it was as if pirates had siezed the station.-.Parq-You may be right-i was quite youn,& o me it was very exciting...Iggy,WreklessEric,MC5,Devo & Clash(before they both sucked)etc-i was escping zep & floyd-&NEW's"Bruce juice"-& "2 for tuesday",etc!
  10:41am
dragnflyshards:

(orry for the typos-bad eyboard)
  10:42am
annie:

dumdum, did you listen regularly? we were addicted.. weasel is till around, but some of those djs... well.. that last day was intense.. the music was incredible, bittersweet. angry.. each flavour according to the particular dj. and lee michael dempsey is doing some internet radio thing. we were good friends. i loved that old man on saturday mornings on pfw, the blues guy..
  10:43am
texas scott:

this magenta loops are are? is? awesome
  10:44am
Parq:

Dragn, in fairness, I've never met anyone else who disliked the punk-and-new-wave PIX. Just my cranky attitude, I suppose. But that was the point where I turned to FMU -- 30 years ago this month, come to think of it. I also dug the more standard college-radio fair that the Montclair State station (WMSC) was putting out.
  10:47am
Trapper:

I wish I had an exciting life like the Bionic Woman. Or like the Bionic Woman had in the 1970's. What's she doing now?
  10:47am
dc pat:

"whan MEELLeeon dollahz"
  10:48am
Dum Dum Guy at the Gates of Dawn:

Annie - Jerry Washington - the Bama Hour on WPFW. Never missed it. Lee Michael Dempsey - GET OUT! He was my favorite on WAMU. The day I stopped giving money to WAMU was the day they took his noon to 3 folk music show off the air in favor of more talk BS. I still check him out on bluegrasscountry.com from time to time, which is also on WAMU HD2 if you have HD radio.

Have you been stalking me? LOL
  10:48am
Trapper:

I often wonder about 'the point where people turned' to FMU. I think of myself as being from 'Bongwater Time.'
  10:49am
Dum Dum Guy at the Gates of Dawn:

Annie - Damian and some of the old HFS crew went out to WRNR in Annapolis for a while, but a check of the WRNR website reveals most of the old crowd is gone.
  10:49am
still b/p:

If "bionic" connotes enhanced capability, greater effectiveness and power, this funny production is anti-bionic. ("Too much slick entertainment in my diet, so my doctor prescribed a course of antibionics.")
  10:51am
Carmichael:

I'm waiting for Jack Cassidy to come in.
  10:51am
dragonflyshards:

"munnay"
  10:52am
Trapper:

I hope everyone is visualizing those Bionic Leaps!
  10:52am
cordesc:

Too much antibionics are the problem these days.... you need to take some probionics to help maintain normal balance!
  10:53am
Dum Dum Guy at the Gates of Dawn:

bluegrasscountry.org - sorry
  10:53am
texas scott:

you can find Bionic Woman on Wonderland records.
  10:53am
dc pat:

HAHAHAHhahahahah...
  10:54am
dc pat:

that was great, thanks trouble. Why don't they play bionic woman records on WAMU dammit?
  10:55am
still b/p:

...and I can get beneficial probionics if I consume the right showgurt?
  10:56am
annie:

dumdum, i wish i could get a playlist for the last day of broadcast.. any idea how to do that? i've emailed weasel a couple times, no reply at all..
  10:57am

...in honour of Anne Hutchinson's bionic leaps.

Taking a break from work to check the news. Best headline re Rep. Frank: "Barney: I don't love you, you don't love me".
  11:17am
annie:

dumdum, wow!! guess alot of people were askin about it.. did you know which dj started his show with a heavy beat riff. very intense. he played the entire tune with a female vocalist as the first song of the show that day.
  11:20am
Dum Dum Guy at the Gates of Dawn:

Annie - I am finally stumped (chagrined).
  11:21am
trouble:

i much prefer the barney frank retort to on of those crazy hollering hired nut jobs: "on what planet do you spend most of your time?"
  11:24am
Carmichael:

Out-of-tune space banjo. Interesting .....
  11:30am
dc pat:

yeah, it was really refreshing to hear sense coming out of Frank in the face of all the nut-jobs. Why aren't more of the Dumocrats doing this? They have to stand up to all the hired hands and get the one liners into the news..
  11:31am
Parq:

I don't think the "Nazi" constituent was GOP-hired. She was a follower of Lyndon LaRouche; they have a national campaign to call Obama's health plan Nazi. Fox, while hammering Barney of course, also excoriated the questioner and compared LaRouchites to cockroaches.
  11:32am
still b/p:

Until the vocal started, the riff sounded like this was going to be an interesting cover of Steveie Wonder's "Too High".
  11:35am
drgonflyshards:

'time t work. Thanks,Trouble, all...till then.
  11:36am
annie:

i actually like some of what larouche has to say, but he just gets weird for me. and some of his followers are just way too far out there.
  11:36am
dc pat:

annie, cut it out.
  11:37am
Carmichael:

The Repubs seem to going through a catharsis presently. When the country club types started calling themselves moderates and held the neo-cons at arm's length, it seems the nutjob faction of the neocons decided to "take action". Alcoa is profiting most, as they can't make enough tinfoil to meet current hat demands. The GOP is shattered.

She-doobie ........
  11:37am
annie:

fine, then.. :)
  11:41am
Laurie:

I loooooooove Barney Frank now.
  11:42am
Joe Steele:

Poor Senators...that sounds funny.

I jus' keeding!
  11:44am
kathryn:

Watched "Sicko" last night. Sad.
  11:45am
dc pat:

ha, good one Carm! "hat demands"..
  11:48am
Chris:

Good for Barney. So tired of the wingnut zombies parroting talking points they don't even understand.
  11:50am
Carmichael:

I took a chance on Royksopp after hearing the GEICO commercial song. Pulsating, ambient stuff, different than everything else on my iPod.
  11:50am
v k:

politics is show-biz on a different set
  11:55am
annie:

wonderful show today trouble...
  11:57am
trouble:

thanks annie!
  11:57am

Oh, Trouble, you've done it again! I just tuned in, and a day that was looking down, has turned right around by the sound of a soft French boy voice followed now by some way-cool CUMBIA!!! YAYYYYY, CUMBIAAAAAAAAH! I'm up and dancing! Keep it coming!
  11:58am
Carmichael:

Thanks Trouble. We'll talk about religion next week to lighten the mood .....
  10:40am
