A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Adrian in London:

Hi Trouble and everyone. Saw Marissa Nadler play last night. She was great. But no fire alarms! The venue, The Luminaire, has painted on the wall things such as SHUT UP: no-one has paid to listen to you talking to your pals. If you want to talk to your pals, go outside and talk.

Finally, sanity reigns.

Ain't no bulletin here...but that Northern Soul selection was the kind of sound that I don't think ever could be duplicated today in flavor, style, recording characteristics and sum effect, regardless of the skills of any contemporary artists and technicians that might wanna try.
  9:37am
Listener James from Westwood:

Truth be told: After about the 3rd "Police Academy" sequel, "Bimbo" and its context are about the only watchable parts of the film.
  9:39am
chris:

Let's not pretend that any of the Police Academy movies are actually good!
  9:42am

i watched "evil alien conquerers" last night. wow. how campy, but reaaly stupidly funny. you'd do better to get "small" before you watch it.
  9:44am

Some of the clothing in "Old Navy" have these little tags which say, "Made In Vietnam." Who could've guessed back then that forty years later they'd make polo shirts to sell in US.

the jim jarmusch movie " dead man" that neil young did the score to is a superb movie!
  10:15am
dc pat:

hey! I didn't say anything...but if I did, I'd say the 10th Victim. But good luck finding it...
  10:15am
doug from dc:

Simon of the Desert has really poor production values, but it's one of Bunuel's funniest. He ran out of money before he could finish it, and used a random on-set occurance to end it. Won't spoil it though. That line, "I want to go back to my pillar" sticks with me to this day.
  10:15am
Rob:

Movies: "nines" was cool, "Napoline Dynamite": funny, "Waking life" thought provoking
  10:15am
George Eliot:

I saw it on hulu last night. want the link?
  10:16am
Faust Gertz:

Here are some films I recall enjoying and haven't thought about for a ong time: 'Hol volt, hol nem volt' aka 'A Hungarian Fairy Tale', 'W.R. - Misterije organizma' aka 'WR: Mysteries of the Organism', 'Hop', and 'Chameleon Street'. Might as well give a shout of for 'Point Blank' (1967).

  10:22am
dale:

Welsh looks like it should be found on an alien sphere!
  10:24am
55ffrr:

If you don't mind subtitles, check out a Kieslowski film sometime. I recommend any from his 'Decalogue' or 'Red" from the 3 color trilogy. Also, 'Happy-Go-Lucky' is scary-fun.
  10:25am
Parq:

Viv, if your nabe has an indy rental place that stocks the obscure and off-off-Hollywood, you should get to work having it landmarked. When Kim's went under, it signaled the end of an era, if not an eon.
  10:25am
Cecile:

If you read the Mushroom Planet books, the Welsh originally came from there. What a great series.
  10:25am

Classy movies I like:
Stranger than Ficition
Ran
Dersu Uzala
The Fall
The Iron Giant
The Third Man
Annie Hall
Wall-E
American Splendor
  10:29am
Freddy from: West Orange Plumbing Supply:

Touble, can you play me some Dan Tyminski
  10:31am
Ike:

I second that, 55ffrr. Kieslowski's brilliant "The Double Life of Veronique" warped, lit up, and broadened my young mind at the old Key Cinema in D.C.

And I agree with many of Cecile's faves, esp. "Iron Giant."
  10:31am
JCityJensen:

have you seen the time of the wolf?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXB9sCa3VGw
  10:31am
Ike:

GP, the reason you can let your kids can watch "Napoleon Dynamite" is because it's a Mormon movie. The Mormons are using fam.-friendly movies to secretly brainwash your kids with religious propaganda hidden deeply within Jared Hess's snark. Although they're not as powerful as Disney... yet. ;)
  10:32am
Cecile:

Less classy movies I still adore:

Bridget Jones' Diary
Music and Lyrics
Old School
Wedding Crashers
Airplane
Talladega Nights
Blades of Glory
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
Clueless
Wayne's World
The Transporter
House of Flying Daggers.
  10:32am
dc pat:

I also like Naked by Mike Leigh
  10:33am
cecile:

I liked the dance at the end.
That was shockingly un-Mormon in its hip gyrations.
For me, it had a feel of where I grew up. Slow, static and weird.
  10:34am
dc pat:

worst movie: Battlefield Earth which I watched last night because I was sick.
  10:34am
GP:

LOL Ike---I'm watching out for them!!

Cecile has the other kids favorites movies on her list: Iron Giant ,and Wall_E..they also love "My Neighbor Totoro", etc.
  10:34am
Cecile:

that probably made you sick in and of itself.
  10:35am
GP:

Don't forget the "Toxic Avenger", but NOT a kids movie!
  10:36am
ta da:

anyone know what us war is considered the forgotten war?
  10:36am
cecile:

I'm a big kid. I love Howl's Moving Castle and Kiki's Delivery Service.

Also, I really liked Coraline recently and I'm forgetting something...
  10:36am
Parq:

. . .in his [W's] *successful* attempt. And, as was pointed out often, the press that led the charge against the war machine in the 60s was Bushie's biggest cheerleader in recent years.
  10:37am
Cecile:

And don't forget schlock classics like Bachelor Party and Wayne's World, and Valley Girl
  10:37am
Parq:

Five movies that I hated, despite the huge number of people who love them

1. Harold & Maude
2. The Field
3. Sandlot
4. Chocolat
5. Vicki Christina Barcelona
  10:39am
chris:

Sorry, I had to run an errand. None of the Police Academy movies are very good, sorry :)
  10:40am
cecile:

Oh, hai, Trouble, I saw Flight of the Conchords Sunday night.
SO AMAZING.
AMAZING.
You have to google, "Jemaine gold pants" Just saying.

I liked the Sandlot. I didn't see the rest. I hated Crouching Tiger, Hidden
Dragon. They were all dicks and the kung fu was not all that.

The Police Academy movies are kind of lousy, but I still laugh at them in spots.
  10:40am
Tom Lyle:

Trouble's show always improves my crappy mood. Thank you.
  10:40am
dc pat:

A movie I hate despite rave reviews: Breaking the Waves, fekkin dreadful.
  10:40am
GP:

"This is Spinal Tap".....no?

I got to see them live this past weekend on their 25th
( good gawd?) reunion tour..very funny and actually good musicians.
  10:41am
Feral Cat:

Harold & Maude! Stranger Than Fiction! Wall-E!!! Rosemary's Baby! Pecker! Grizzly Man! Happiness!!! Hysterical Psycho (Tribecca Film Fest '09)! Adaptation! Sordid Lives!!!!
  10:42am
chris:

this is beautiful
  10:42am
Cecile:

It looks terrible, what I've seen from plot descriptions.

The Prestige was also terrible.
  10:42am
doug from dc:

Eyeless in Gaza is an old fave. "Under the Leaves..." especially.
  10:42am
cecile:

spinal tap is amazing.
OH, and BEST IN SHOW!
  10:43am
chris:

One of my fav Fishing wirth John moments: Dennis Hopper continually popping sugar pills in the Southeast while JOhn continues to not catch fish
  10:43am
George Eliot:

y tu mama tambien. wonderful flick.
  10:43am
dc pat:

I'm also a big fan of just about anything by Kurosawa
  10:44am
texas scott:

'waiting for guffman' is the best movie...EVER!!!
  10:44am
trouble:

hey tom tom lyle! thanks for the good words...
  10:44am
dc pat:

I like when Tom Waits, in his biker boots and shorts, gets sea sick. The Fishing with John is one of my fave songs EVER!
  10:45am
George Eliot:

anything with dennis hopper, blue velvet and "carried away"......oooh, waiting for guffman .. a hoot!
  10:45am
Cecile:

Oh, City of God.
And The Dog (or Bombon El Perro alternate title)
Texas Scott, I would say that about Best in SHow, although Guffman is a close second.
  10:45am
sugarwolf:

Valley Girl is probably the last good thing Nicholas Cage has been in!
  10:46am
chris:

2 of my favs:
House of Flying Daggers
Rushmore
  10:46am
sugarwolf:

my DVD player was not working, but I think I fixed it... for now.
  10:46am
chris:

and the scene in Kung Fu Hustle with the dulcimer-like weapon
  10:48am
GP:

"The Replacement Killers"...Mira Sorvino lokks nice in this one.
  10:48am
doug from dc:

Trouble, speaking of Joan of Arc, the odd coincidence is that while I was surfing around Wikipedia early this am before your show, I ran into this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dihya. A North African version - never heard of her before.
  10:48am
cecile:

Chris, both are awesome.
And Daggers has the action, the sexiness and the emotion that Crouching Tiger lacked.

Sugarwolf - you know it. You know it!

Kung Fu Hustle is also awesome. As are Drunken Master 1 and 2
  10:48am
Sugarwolfs DVD player:

Stop wailin on me bro!
  10:49am
George Eliot:

"before the rain". serbian and intense..
  10:50am

  10:51am
George Eliot:

cecile, good to see you up and around..
  10:51am
sugarwolf:

I saw five minutes of the NC version of The Wicker Man. BLEH. I love the orginal tho, and bought a 2nd copy on DVD, just to get the extended cut.
  10:51am
jaypee:

Oooooo.. I love Drunken Master 1 and 2!!! I've been itching to rent Kung Fu Hustle. Cecile's endorsement sealed the deal..

Got to see the painting "Joan of Arc" by Jules Bastien-Lepage up close. It is insanely large, like 8 feet tall. Joan is larger than life and I don't remember the term, but it describes the feeling you get when looking at great art or hearing great music..that woozy, lightheadeness..well I had it in spades...remarkable painting...HIGHLY emotional.
  11:09am
Synecdoche:

Decline, failure, and death depress people, unless they are openminded about painful things... Duh...

If you all are interested in these religion inspired revolutionary movements, read Pursuit of the Millennium, Norman Cohn. There were all kinda nutty visionaries in the Middle Ages

  11:24am
George Eliot:

According to U.S. News & World Report, library and information science ranks as one of the "Best Careers of 2008."The median annual salary for 2007 is reported as $51,400 USD in the United States, with additional salary breakdowns available by metropolitan area, with San Francisco coming in the highest with an average salary of $64,400 and Philadelphia the lowest at $48,200. This is up from the median salaries in 2006 as $49,060 reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The increase can basically be attributed to keeping pace with inflation. A $49,060 salary in 2006 was adjusted to $50,457.33,and while data is not yet posted for 2008, adding the same rate of inflationary increase for 2008 (1.028%) one could project an inflationary salary adjustment as $51,894.46 for the 2008 fiscal year.[6] In December of 2007, the BLS projected growth for the field at "4 percent between 2006 and 2016", which is "slower than the average for all occupations", because, its authors assert, "As electronic resources become more common and patrons and support staff become more familiar with their use, fewer librarians are needed to maintain and assist users with these resources."

not to rain on anyone's parade but ol' Joan displayed some pretty classic schizophrenic tendencies--voices in the head develops in the teenage years of a schizophrenic and are believed to be a misinterpretation of the patients own thoughts. Crazy or Saint...you decide...

thanks for inspiring me to go and get the dead man soundtrack!

but I'm really confused -

why on some of the tracks, like the round stones beneath track, is there the sound of a car in the back along with doors being opened and closed? nothing like that in the movie, as cars were not around yet.
