A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

  9:38am
Parq:

Annie, are you saying the two are related?
  9:39am
dale:

that album sounds like it was recorded off the TV when it was being aired. It needs a proper mastering.
  9:40am
annie:

well, it happened just as i was reading the der spiegel feed, after i read the scientific american story on updike.. i smell a conspiracy.. i hate when that happens. wish i could figure it out..
  9:43am
annie:

found this funny little ditty last night... aphex twin featured..!

Oh god, that Rubber Johnny movie freaked me OUT when it first made the rounds of the internet. :(
  9:47am
annie:

that website has the best stuff!! i was merely cruising it. now and then they add new stuff..
  9:49am
ellen museum girl:

oh my god i'm still asleep...thank goodness for some trouble in the morning
  9:50am
GP:

Annie,
That video is insanely scary. If you really want the full freak fest check out some of the artists other work..I'll leave the intertubes denizens to do their own searching as I don't want to be responsible for the mind warpage.......good day all.
  9:51am
dale:

sounds like france gall on helium!
  9:52am
texas scott:

  10:03am
nasoj:

that's some maria carey range up there.
  10:04am
michael:

i had not seen rubberjohnny, thank you for posting the link. of course, i'm an eraserhead fan too.
  10:05am
PKNY:

That Minnie track is really really good, thank you. Mariah and her ilk have nothing on her.
  10:07am
annie:

i loved eraserhead.. the blacker, the better..
  10:08am
GP:

Useless daily trivia:
Minnie Ripperton is Mya Rudolphs ( form Saturday Night Live) mom.
Thank you...now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
  10:09am
Laurie:

I had to look up Minnie Riperton on wikipedia to confirm that she is the singer of "Lovin' You." Yes, as if it isn't kind of obvious. ALSO: She's Maya Rudolph's mommy!

Also, personally, I prefer David Lynch's daily weather updates. You know, to Rubber Johnny and Eraserhead and things of that ilk. I'm kind of a wimp.
  10:09am
michael:

my brother's been struggling to get through it. i told him to stop. if it's that much work, don't bother.
  10:14am
annie:

i still hold "validation" up there with pretty damn cool.
  10:15am
ellen museum girl:

yum...accordion.
  10:19am
GP:

Yummm. Claudine!
Merci beaucoup!
  10:19am
dale:

Maria Muldaur is also a bit more interesting than 'Midnight at the Oasis' implies. She was in the Jim Kweskin jug band before her solo career...
  10:20am
Scott M.:

LOVING your show this morning, trouble. thx.
  10:21am

This beto villares is so smooth, nice touch trouble.

Spider Sabich:

Well, at least the skiing is good where I'm at.
  10:23am
annie:

i trying out the snowshoes for the first time today...
  10:24am
Cecile:

Anyone have any good remedies from memory improvement? I'm a space cadet lately.

Awww. annie, that sounds great.
  10:27am
dale:

snowshoeing is fun and a workout for the calfs (calves?). I like looking at all the critter tracks in the fresh snow and hearing the woodpeckers banging away. Enjoy!
  10:28am
annie:

cecile, i hate to say this but mental exercise helps me alot. and i try to do math in my head everytime. seems to keep the barin sharp, otherwise, perhaps your mind is rejecting useless information.. oh, and crossword puzzles!!
  10:29am
annie:

of course only MY barin should remain sharp, you might want to focus on your "brain" ...(i really have to start using my glasses for typing).
  10:30am
fishmonkeystew:

I too have a pretty poor memory. Knocking out alcohol, eating better, and trying to get more exercise have also helped, in addition to reading alot (especially books that challenge me). Not the most exciting stuff, but (much to my wife's delight) it's worked so far.
  10:30am
Cecile:

I'm doing sudoku and crossword puzzles and weird modern solitaire games, and errrrrrrrrrr.
I got into this tiff with DH because I was convinced he never gave me this one Shirley Collins/Albion Band CD to rip, but not only did I get it from him, I loaded it like...twice...already. And that's not useless information - it's a great album!
  10:31am
Cecile:

Sorry - DH = dear husband. Other board terminology.
  10:31am
ellen museum girl:

take fish oil, that helps tha brain. but the small catch fish are best- less mercury for you, more fish for the ocean.
  10:31am
annie:

senility is not pretty
  10:31am
Anatoly:

I find that smoking lots of weed and eating candy corn helps keep me sharp.
  10:32am
ratel:

cecile, first thing (for me) is not accepting to forget : when I don't remember, I try to reconstruct the "knowledge context" until I finally get it - and don't give up until it's done
  10:32am
ellen museum girl:

Nice, anatoly!

also, watching this video helps:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQp5l4-sfFA
  10:35am
annie:

ellen, wonderful!!!
  10:35am
Bad Ronald:

Yay Steve Miller!!
  10:35am
annie:

trouble, i have to say that this show has been sweet sailing this morning..
  10:36am
listener mark:

Oh wow!
Where did that go?
I typed a comment and it vanished.
  10:36am
Mooose:

'Weed' and NYTimes crosswords.
  10:36am
Cecile:

Oh, Christ.
Play Paul (Tuvan Blues) Pena's original version at least.

Sorry, too much late SMB in my youth.
  10:37am
Cupcake Dog:

Ginkgo Biloba and Gotu Kola help the memory, supposedly.
  10:37am
annie:

cecile, i was just thinking that...
  10:37am
GP:

Steve Miller...one of the best song intros ever...plus he is from Texas...double bonus.

Annie..are you requesting Christopher Cross?
  10:37am
Ken:

Funky "kicks?"
  10:38am
trouble:

thanks annie!
  10:38am
Roger:

Most excellent segue in my opinion
  10:38am
Cupcake Dog:

Funky kicks goin' down in the city. Always.
  10:39am
Cecile:

Ken,
it's funky sh*t on the album version.
Paul Pena's version is even swearier.
  10:39am
annie:

it's this: i love whatever comes out of these speakers. sure GP...
  10:39am
lovich:

Do I have to say: "I love WFMU!"
  10:39am
Bad Ronald:

  10:40am
BSI:

WHOO!
LITTLE SPOTTED KIWI IN DA HOUSE!
  10:40am
ellen museum girl:

glad you liked it, annie! rock on!
  10:40am
Cupcake Dog:

My bad. Only heard the radio version.
  10:41am
Bad Ronald:

remember nothing and you will not forget anything!
  10:41am
Parq:

Wait, the Steve Miller Band did "Aqualung"?
  10:41am
Cecile:

I thought Steve Miller was from Milwaukee. Him and Boz Scaggs were like high school buds there I thought.

See, I can remember this crap, but I can't even think to look at what's on my iPod.

Aqualung sucks too. As does Abracadabra.
  10:41am
ellen museum girl:

I like that...little spotted kiwi in da house. nice.

awesome show, trouble. as always!
  10:42am
listener mark:

It wouldn't be Thursday without The Modern World
  10:42am
GP:

Steve Miller..from Dallas went to St. Marks school up there.
  10:43am
Cecile:

Got it! So not a "native milwaukeean" as the Milwaukee Journal used to say.
  10:43am
fishmonkeystew:

I tried Ginkgo Biloba and it just made me scatter-brained. I was so disappointed.
  10:45am
Drunken Paul Weller:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1103291/Shambolic-Paul-Weller-pictured-lying-gutter-drunken-night-young-lover.html
  10:45am
annie:

FMS- it is not for everyone. might even be harmful to some..
  10:45am
BSI:

fishmonkeystew:
i've heard buckshot has the same effect.
use with caution.
or not at all.
  10:45am
GP:

Cecile. just looked him up on Wiki.He is indeed from Milwaukee...moved to Texas later..hmmm. Thank you Wikipedia.
  10:47am
Steve Miller:

I don't remember where I'm from.
  10:48am
Cecile:

You're such a space cowboy, Miller.
  10:48am
Laurie:

FYI, Ginkgo biloba apparently increases blood lead levels in women. Not so great actually!
  10:50am
Steve Miller...also:

Some people call me Maurice
  10:50am
Cecile:

good to know Laurie.
  10:52am
Pompetus of Love:

You have to be careful with all of these herbal remedies.
  10:52am
Sean Daily:

Woo Hoo!
  10:52am
BSI:

A related herbal product, Ginko Biloba Baggins, leads to hairy feet and an unnatural obsession with a certain piece of gold jewelry.
  10:53am
dale:

that has to be the best station ID i have ever heard, right down to the echo.
  10:54am
Bad Ronald:

Rocky Biloba will leave you feeling punch drunk...
  10:55am
trouble:

not to sound like a total earth mama, but sometimes memory loss is because there is too much happening for the brain to hold it all in. slow down...
  10:57am
Cecile:

thanks trouble, but if I go any slower, the snails and slugs are going to pass me up...;)
  10:57am
Maurice:

Oil of pompetus will make you a picker, a grinner, a lover, a sinner, and make you moody if you don't get out to play your music in the sun.
  10:57am
Bob Dobbs:

Achieve total slack.
  10:58am
Cecile:

but you're probably right, trouble, I could stand to shuck off a few more piles of mental junk.

B-Dobbs, that's your answer for everything.
  10:59am
listener mark:

post it notes help.
I've got one next to the bed.
pants first, then shoes.
it really helps.
  11:00am
annie:

and keep in mind you could always attach little memo magnets to your computer!!
  11:01am
Meher Baba:

A mind that is fast is sick. A mind that is slow is sound. A mind that is still is divine.
  11:04am
Adrian in London:

If you do want to learn a language, I can recommend using Michel Thomas CDs as a starting point.
  11:05am
Sean Daily:

Not even close to first comment! Woo hoo!
  11:05am
Drunk Paul Weller:

A good memory is overrated. I forget what I was drinking to forget.
  11:07am
patrick:

hey trouble! sounds like you need to upgrade to a mac....

we got about 8 inches of snow yesterday then about 2 inches of crusty ice on top... yuck!

see the wrestler yet?
  11:08am
Mooose:

I always wondered about that Paterson Plank road. Assumed it had been made of planks for some reason, and now I know the reason!
  11:09am
Ike:

"Why does everything break and not work if it's supposed to be digital?" Because it's made in China.

Patrick, Macs are too expensive, and I don't like anything that takes years to put in a right-click function. Just be careful what you put on your PC.

I wondered about Paterson Plank Road too!
  11:10am
Drunk Pompetus of Cupcakes:

I saw a North American Great Horned Owl once while riding my bicycle through the Potomac River bird sanctuary. When it took off, it's wingspan was well over four feet. It looked like it could carry off a small child.
  11:10am
trouble:

patrick! i have a mac and hi speed cable connection, that is until it goes out for the day due to "repairs" in the nabe.

warm hellos to you...
  11:14am
annie:

i was blassed by the sight of a peregrine falcon the other day driving home.. sitting right by the road on a tree-branch..
  11:14am
michael:

Macs are the best! They've had right mouse functionality for years, you just needed to get a two or three button mouse. Now they have their mighty mouse so no need. Price-wise they're pretty comparable, feature for feature.
  11:15am
Cecile:

I love my Mac. no probs for the most part.
  11:16am
ellen museum girl:

Oh my god, the Wrestler was so good, Patrick! I'm in love with Mickey Rourke!
  11:16am
annie:

my son will use nothing but a mac, anymore..
  11:17am
fishmonkeystew:

Yeah, I dropped that Ginkgo right away. I'm an estimator at an electrical contracting firm and can't afford to be too scattered. WFMU playlist comments distract me enough.

I've heard a few times that events need to make an impression on you in order to be remembered. If you purposely commit something to memory (repeat it in your mind), you will be more likely to remember it.
  11:18am
Irin:

Hey trouble. Great show!
just wanted to let you know that the White Birch album is called "Star is just the Sun"
  11:19am
BSI:

There's a pair of red-tailed hawks nesting in a large tree not far from this keyboard (franklin square, downtown dc) -- good to see 'em. .. proof of life outside the cubes. etc.
  11:20am
risky!:

darn missed the sic alps.... morning all!
  11:21am
annie:

the hawks that got evicted then returned to that co-op. i forget their names.. great story!!
  11:21am
Ike:

Michael, I strongly beg to differ on price, for those able to put together a PC themselves. Also, I dislike VLC and the evil, evil, evil iTunes.

Mark, I'll have to resort to Post-It notes soon. I can't remember anything and my life is already very slow. And Ginkgo just makes me really... well... let's just say it's a good non-prescription substitute for a certain blue pill, at least in my experience.

Great show!
  11:22am
Cecile:

Yeah, fms, I will have to start doing that.
My mind used to be better at remembering things with just a scrap of info, that's not the case.
  11:23am
Cecile:

now, now that's not the case now.

Reely I cn rite gud.
  11:23am
annie:

cecile, between you, me, and the wall, my memory returned as soon as i was menopausal...
  11:26am
michael:

Ike, I've also got a home built Linux box. I was strickly talking retail pricing. Don't like VLC? What about Mplayer?

iTunes? Why use that when there's eMusic?

There are plenty of options, I just forget them right now.
  11:29am
Cecile:

I only use iTunes for apps now.
Amazon's mp3s sound better, and you can copy 'em. And emusic is great, too.

Annie - I'm hoping. I just started, shall we say, the long voyage to cronedom.
  11:29am
Pompetus S:

Ike: so I'm not the only one who feels that way about iTunes.
  11:30am
Ii'l bobby:

Hey trouble, lovin' the show this morning! Hope my ue-benefits continue for a while longer...I could get used to this.
  11:30am
listener mark:

I hang a suet cake on a tree outside my window. Fixed it so the starlings can't get it. The small birds can hang upside down and eat. The starlings can't or at least don't like it that way.
  11:31am
dale:

you folks who build your own pcs: could you direct me to a good site showing me how? I'd like to build a Linux unit with a steampunk-inspired case. I'm sick of Apple not supporting their older stuff (4 years old is ancient to the computer industry). My PowerBook was NOT worth the money I spent on it...
  11:34am
Parq:

With due respect to Ike and his {understandable} "everything mainstream sucks" orientation, I converted to Mac last summer and am completely pleased. Ike's approach is fine if you're willing to immerse yourself in the digital DIY culture. I dig that, and wish I had time for it, but I don't. The extra money for Mac is well worth the savings in agita.
  11:35am
Shana:

Thanks such a lot for this great show today, Trouble! You bring so much awesome.
  11:36am
annie:

rest assured cecile, it does get better.. as i said before, life begins at 50!
  11:37am
Chris:

thanks Trouble. You are making the march toward lunch actually enjoyable
  11:37am
michael:

Trouble, fantastic show this morning! adeus.
  11:38am
Patrick:

i have been using eMusic for about 2 years, its such a good deal. i just with the sight was a little easier to navagate. boy the wrestler was a good movie... i would give to nod to Sean Penn i milk though.

there are plenty of other resources for Mac users other then apple, i have found great success with Oldapps.com

sorry to make this into a "Tec Talk" segment.
  11:38am
annie:

if i ever had to go back to work, i would make sure that i could bring FMU with me. no radio-ee, no work-ee..
  11:39am
Ike:

Everything mainstream does not suck. That's Irwin's mischaracterization of me. PCs are pretty mainstream after all. And I like Tom Petty.

I'm not great at DIY or putting things together. A friend gave me instructions. It wasn't hard. Admittedly I was unemployed then, though, so I had time for trial and error. Anyway, sorry to start another PC-Mac war. This is pointless; we'll never agree. But I love the music right now!

Adrian in London:

Annie, I'm at work and had to use a stupid PC with no way of listening to the first half of this show. Now I'm back on a Mac and it's coming through loud and clear. I listened to the MR Finewine podcast in the interim, but it's not the same. Work without music is impossible. Earphones are a great way of ignoring your dull workmates too!

Well, I think tht everything mainstream sucks, so if that was your attitude, I'd agree with you. And just for clarity, my hat's totally off to those with the time and the smarts to stay off the Gates/Jobs grid.
