Listener comments!

  9:16am Paul Sherratt:

Here's a doowop tune that has always worked for me ( there aren't that many ! )
It's " Tonight " ( Will Be The Night ) by The Velvets.
Can be be located on this disc :

  9:29am Hugo:

Last week, African C&W. This week: Aboriginal C&W. There 's a world out there to be uncovered, innit?
  9:33am Parq:

A fine week for you, eh Doug? Jessie's birthday and Lincoln's Birthday.
  9:36am Paul Sherratt:

Hugo,

The German C&W that I've caught gimpses of from time to time on their regional tv, might be best covered up ...

Parq,

Oh you mean THAT Lincoln !
  9:37am Billmac:

Jimmy Scott!!!!
  9:37am pat:

wait, is this a set of J's? ---Oh, man ruined it with a B!
  9:41am Parq:

Paul, jus' feelin' a li'l playful. Also, I like apostrophes.
  9:45am Hugo:

Paul, German or "germanic" yodelling on the other hand ...
  10:01am Paul Sherratt:

Hugo,
If yodellin' songs had a required quota in all the world's radio programmes, do you think this would contribute significantly towards a more peaceful world ??

parq,

Which is your favo(u)rite punctuation mark ?
  10:04am Dave:

Sounds like Hank
  10:05am pat:

yeah Hank, but pure beauty...
  10:05am Michael Pripp:

It aint enough real country music played anywhere on this planet.
  10:06am Hugo:

Paul, make yodel, not war.

I've always had a weak spot for the semicolon; far too little used.

I've just updated my Ipod with the Bear Family collections of Jean Shepard and Kitty Wells; for the next time on the road.
  10:07am Michael Pripp:

Except for this program then
  10:13am pat:

I like the curly brackets for 3 levels of asides, like:

I sure like snow {except in Summer [not that ever happens (in DC anyway)]}
  10:20am Listener Dave from NH:

As a programmer, I'm terrified by the prospect of mixing and matching parentheses, braces and brackets on a whim.
The Coltrane documentary's going to be a premium next week? My sincere apologies to all the other fine DJs on the station, but now I know when I'll be getting my pledge on.
  10:27am Cecile:

Same here. Can I call one?
  10:29am Doug:

Yes! I am able to give away the Coltrane documentary as a premium, but for 5 CDs (or one DVD-R) it will be for a hefty pledge. (A major portion of the Mouse of Today size pledge.) The marathon starts Monday, February 25. My co-host on Feb 29 will be the legendary Steinski. On March 7, my fave DJ Monica will be co-piloting. I'm a lucky guy.
  10:32am Cecile:

How much is a Mouse pledge? (counts pennies, plans visit to plasma center)
  10:36am Paul Sherratt:

Well, I really feel like Flying Down To Rio ...

I know a few UK DJ's confess to a struggle with the music of Brazil. All I can say is " Why struggle ? "
  10:38am Cecile:

Well put, Paul. The music of Brazil is so instantly likeable...
  10:38am Hugo:

Not Gilles Peterson, for sure ...

A mouse is 365 bucks, I believe, but for us holding foreign currency, getting less and less ...
  10:39am Cecile:

Oh, so like 200 or 300 quatloos? Got it.
  10:42am Meredith:

Can you give the URL of the constant soul blog -- Google isn't giving it up...
  10:45am Hugo:

Yeah, the Inconstant Sol blog - pretty good blog, that one, innit?

http://www.inconstantsol.blogspot.com/
  10:45am Doug:

Thanks Brother Hugo, you beat me to it.
  10:46am Parq:

Paul, was commuting, sorry for the delay. My fave punc mark is the period. As in, "I'm done with this work. Period."
  10:49am Cecile:

Being a woman, that's my least favorite punctuation mark. I'm sure you'll underdstand. ;)
  10:51am Paul Sherratt:

Thanks Parq !

Now following along these Collette Magny lines can anyone guide me to a place where I can obtain resistance songs performed by Anna Marly ?

  11:01am Hugo:

Ah, the "Einheitsfrontlied"! That one brings back memories ... ahem ...
  11:06am pat:

in the spirit of Einheitsfrontlied, one of my bands use to play a punk version of Avanti Popolo, Italian communist song (see link below). Our singer's Uncle actually taught it to her when she was a kid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qHkYXqOPeU
  11:13am Lewis:

this sounds a lot like the Sax for Pax stuff... Anyone have thoughts / knowledge re: the relationship?
  11:19am Parq:

Doug: Saw Fiona Shaw's "Happy Days" at BAM a while ago. It killed; no doubt, Stewart's "Macbeth" will do likewise.
  11:26am Albert Patterson:

Did someone say Phenix City?????
  11:35am Hugo:

It takes 5 seconds to recognise the sound of Evan Parker (or less). I had the chance to see him up front last year. He was looking towards our table, said "watch this" and would launch into one of his circular breathing exercises. After finishing, looked again towards our table and said "good?". Indeed it was.
  11:39am Matt:

I'm loving this SOS- was it a download?
  11:41am Hugo:

The voice at the beginning of that SOS track was Charles Fox, BBC jazz presenter at the time - mid-70s. No longer with us, unfortunately.
  11:45am Doug:

Matt,
Yes, the download is here:
http://tinyurl.com/2kjqss
  11:51am Matt:

Awesome- thanks Doug!
  3:12am Paul Sherratt:

Hugo and other punctuation mark fans - may I draw your attention to this Nigeria Special site. Track 7 of CD1 will please you all, I'm sure.

  7:11am Andrea:

Doug, you might be interested in Jimmy Little's covers of Indie Australian gems, a la Cash - it kinda brought him out of obscurity a few years back...
  8:02pm Hugo:

Paul,

I do see (having got said item today). What can I say except I told you so ...

Only a matter of time before it's added to Doug's playlist, I suspect ...
