In Don's case there might be underlying Alzheimer's (just playing the odds by prevalence), but we know for sure it's at least partly vascular, with one stroke several years ago and now this one. I've known him for 40 years or more, Dave Mandl also knew him, but Don just moved in with me 2 years ago and his dementia then was a bother but not something that needed constant supervision. We made both of our lives better.

Doug, when I was an occupational therapist, I occasionally had folks with dementia on caseload. There is a real difference cognitively and behaviorally depending on what stage they are in, of course, but regardless was always very difficult to do physical rehab. It was so discouraging to know that despite all the research, it filtering down to some settings to actuate was ultimately met with a guarded response: a restructuring, a re educating staff, and assorted necessary changes ended up making it cost prohibitive

Don also had anosagnosia. His career aspiration the past couple years was to become a gentleman escort on cruise ships. I pointed out this would require being a good dancer. But hey, what man in his 70s wouldn't want a job hobnobbing with rich ladies like that? Might as well hang onto that fantasy. Anosagnosia has its benefits!
