' Peter Kowald (21 April 1944 – 21 September 2002) was a German free jazz and free improvising double bassist and tubist.A member of the Globe Unity Orchestra, and a touring double-bass player, Kowald collaborated with many European free jazz and American free-jazz players during his career, including Peter Brötzmann, Irène Schweizer, Karl Berger, Fred Anderson, Hamid Drake, Karl E. H. Seigfried, Conny Bauer, Jeffrey Morgan, Wadada Leo Smith, Günter Sommer, William Parker, Barre Phillips, Joëlle Léandre, Alfred Harth, Lauren Newton and Evan Parker. He also recorded a number of solo double-bass albums, and was a member of the London Jazz Composer's Orchestra until 1985. He also recorded a number of pioneering double bass duets with Maarten Altena, Barry Guy, Joëlle Léandre, Barre Phillips, William Parker, Damon Smith and Peter Jacquemyn.
In addition, Kowald collaborated extensively with poets and artists and with the dancers Gerlinde Lambeck, Anne Martin (formerly of Pina Bausch Ensemble), Tadashi Endo, Patricia Parker (founder of the Vision Festival), Maria Mitchell, Sally Silvers, Cheryl Banks (formerly of Sun Ra's Arkestra), Arnette de Mille, Sayonara Pereira, and Kazuo Ohno. Specific works included Die Klage der Kaiserin (1989) with Pina Bausch, short pieces (since 1989) with Jean Sasportes, The spirit of adventure (1990) with Anastasia Lyra, Wasser in der Hand (1990/91) with Christine Brunel, and Futan no sentaku/The burden of choice (1990/91) with Min Tanaka and Butch Morris.
Besides his duo work with singers such as Jeanne Lee, Diamanda Galás, Anna Homler or Sainkho Namtchylak, Peter was especially interested in his international improvising ensemble Global Village with musicians from different cultural regions of the world: China, Japan, Near East, South Europe, North and South America.
He died of a heart attack in New York City in 2002. '

' Alan Richard James Skidmore (born 21 April 1942) is an English jazz tenor saxophonist, and the son of saxophonist Jimmy Skidmore. He was born in London, England. Skidmore began his professional career in his teens, and early in his career he toured with comedian Tony Hancock. In the 1960s, he began frequently appearing with the BBC Radio Big Band, then worked with Alexis Korner, John Mayall, and Ronnie Scott. Commissioned by the BBC in order to represent the UK at the Montreaux Jazz Festival, Skidmore formed a group with Harry Miller, Tony Oxley, John Taylor, and Kenny Wheeler. This group won three of six awards at Montreaux, following which Skidmore was invited to record an album of the group's performances, forming the basis for Once Upon a Time. In the early 1970s, he started a saxophone-only band with John Surman and Mike Osborne. He has also worked with Mose Allison, Kate Bush, Elton Dean, Georgie Fame, Mike Gibbs, George Gruntz, Elvin Jones, Van Morrison, Stan Tracey, Charlie Watts, and Mike Westbrook. '

Speaking of doctors, real or otherwise, a player on my daughter's soccer team last week took a bad fall and apparently crushed her elbow. She's a tough 13-year-old, but she was in pain and crying. Fortunately, her mother is an ER doctor, and her pediatrician is the mother of one of the other players. Turns out she had no fracture whatsoever and her elbow is fine. Her mother is furious that she was "conned" into believing it was a break.

A penalty kick yesterday gave her team a last-minute chance to tie the score, but last week the poor kid tripped over her own feet.

I am convinced that the daughter was not interested in conning anybody at the time, but the mom--a doctor--felt duped. It's a fun family dynamic thing. From where I stood, on the sideline and without any medical training, it sure looked pretty bad, the arm dangling, any movement a source of pain.

^was surprised

Not counting car accidents, I can think of only two serious-ish injuries I've experienced. One was while I was doing some gardening at a neighbor's house. I was in my 'teens, and I was using an electric hedge trimmer to trim ivy. Consequently, I didn't see the shuttling blades as I reached into the ivy to grab lower stems. Ow. Oops. Fingertip was not fully detached, but to this day it's numb.

Second one was when I was about 5. I was entirely confident that I knew my way around the house in the dark, so I closed my eyes and ran like hell until the corner of a wall halted my marathon. Gushing blood, freaked out mom, ER. I think I still do stupid stuff like that, albeit more suited to an adult.

I looked it up (German wiki) concerning a club in Berlin called - Floz (pronounced "flotz") and it's slang for a narrow, treacherous passage in a coal mine - as that was apparently what it was like to make it into the performance area there.
  12:59pm
Dean:

Yes, Stork, and this:

By the time I got to high school I'd already done a lot of community theater. Freshman year I witness the school's improv team, juniors and seniors. They were so remarkably good and funny. @RevRab: my tea story: 30+ years ago, I was looking for a Guinness dispensary when I found a tiny tea house. I became a regular there (I never saw another customer there, it was early afternoon). I came in with cowboy boots and leather jacket, but she taught me everything about tea (including not to wear perfume when coming to her place).
Now it takes reservation to get to her place, months to have her do it. She's one of the ten highest ranked tea masters worldwide, the first woman to reach that rank. I was spoiled
