The great author Michael Pollan made the observation that while our system of Food Distribution is in one sense a great advantage over how it's been for most of History - it does have the disadvantage of, if say you have one cow with mad cow disease & grind it up & mix it up with hundreds or maybe thousands of others - & then ship that out all over the place - it's an effective way of distributing disease - or contamination - as well as nutrition (not to say pleasure). Whereas I guess if you're more a Localvore - your regional source either has that concern, or doesn't in a given circumstance...
Politically - I'm pretty sure the one Party will be in favor of resources for Food Safety Regulation for the Public well-being ...& the other less so. Certainly true for issues of the Environment & Toxins both generally & demonstrably...
Distribution (of - most anything) also uses Resources for transportation fuel, of course.
Another aspect of being a Localvore some might think more 'woo-woo' is that things grown where you are have shared the same environment you are in & adapted to it - & so will be better for you there...

Well - probly so that Traditions in this are not as 'ancient' as most people think. For instance, I was surprised to learn that the DADGAD Gittar Tuning now standard throughout Irish Trad was only established by (the inestimable) Davey Graham in the 1960s ! Perhaps in some way comparable to how what we think of as 'Country' Music has really only been codified gradually since the 1940s ?

Bonjour fred, Mr. Rabbit. I just learned that the Irish bouzouki instrument was adapted from the Greek one as recently as the 1960s.

Consider the Blues for example. On one hand the most simple Form (I-IV-V chords, 12 Bars, what have you) - in which it's so much more the Way you do it than What you do - as well as the fundament of so much of our other Musics (Jazz, Rawk &tc.) Yet the Originators - & Innovators - tended to be much less 'Formal' - before it was Codified. John Lee Hooker wasn't much worried with doing exactly 12 Bars - as it were... Observed that - what mattered about Little Walter was - people had *not* stuck a microphone right up to a harmonica like that yet. What first engaged us was that it was once New...

Good morning Cooh John. I got to try one in a music store recently. I love the sound, similar to a 12-string guitar. If I were rolling in dough, I'd get one.

'Bouzouki' as obvsly a Greek word as 'Banjo' is African. The really most Ancient things are probly Pipes & of course Drums.
Tho I also carry an enthusiasm for the notion that things *can* be Musically retained by transmission - as African elements were in the Western Hemisphere against all the greatest Opposition of no less than Slavery & Segregation. To which we owe so much of what we even regard as Music & Culture now - whatsoever. Which is to say, I believe these things Matter.

I had the good fortune to play a few sessions with Johnny Moynihan, who is credited for bringing the bouzouki to Irish music. He later seemed to be unsure if that was a good idea: www.youtube.com...

I would love to introduce the jouhikko to American old-time string band music. The closest I got to that was doing a set of Finnish and American folk music on banjo and jouhikko with Pekko Käppi at Finnish Sauna Day last year.

It's presumed - I think ! - that Music was earlier than Language. Whatever that means. But they say now that Music engages more parts of the brain @ once than about anything else. It's sort of Total. & I think - integrating.
Otoh - I think every Continent & Culture has its own Musical Scale - which I actually equate with the same being true for distinct regional systems of for instance Calendars & Metaphysics - since that fascinates me as well. Point being - I think Musics & the view of the World ~ Universe have a distinct & a direct relation to each other. & it's a bit different for Europeans, Africans, Asians & First Nations Peoples.
@ the same time as it is one of our most shared Human engagements. (Not to say - indeed - vibrational relations to the Universe & Existence themselves.)
