The restaurant had a small TV set up at the cashier station, which didn't appear to be a normal fixture there. I had just gotten my soup when the verdict was announced. Immediately all the black people in the restaurant (of which there were quite a few, many also on jury duty) burst into cheers. I just kind of looked down at my soup and thought despairingly about how wide the gulf between black and white still was in America. When I went back to the holding area, they had Court TV on. I wasn't picked for jury duty and went home. The end.

Immediately all the black people in the restaurant (of which there were quite a few, many also on jury duty) burst into cheers. I just kind of looked down at my soup and thought despairingly about how wide the gulf between black and white still was in America. When I went back to the holding area, they had Court TV on. I wasn't picked for jury duty and went home. The end.
