The Radio Is Broken is a three-hour spelunk through the canyons and fissures of humanity's collective unconscious. It sounds as if a field recording of the Culture Industry were a sonic juggernaut barreling down a rickety track—except that tunnel ahead is just painted onto a sheer cliff wall. With occasional forays into what might pass for "normal" music. Prerequisite journey: Cratedigger's Lung

I honestly just had to look up which year the whole OJ thing happened, because I was barely aware of it then. It was 1995. I was still in college, and living off-campus without cable tv, and internet had yet to come to Brattleboro... or much else, for that matter. Except drugs. There were plenty of those, which may also explain why I wasn't paying attention to national news.

Everything you said, Rich. Yup. Also, the white supremacy angle needs to be considered for comedic treatment. How do we talk about a Black man killing his white ex-wife without, well... ya know... falling prey to tropes. This is where really good comedy can help. Or completely hit wrong.

I guess I will tell my story of the day of the verdict... I was on jury duty in Manhattan, in Chinatown, and I went to a Vietnamese restaurant on our lunch break. The restaurant had a small TV set up at the cashier station, which didn't appear to be a normal fixture there. I had just gotten my soup when the verdict was announced. Immediately all the black people in the restaurant (of which there were quite a few, many also on jury duty) burst into cheers. I just kind of looked down at my soup and thought despairingly about how wide the gulf between black and white still was in America. When I went back to the holding area, they had Court TV on. I wasn't picked for jury duty and went home. The end.

Kat in the chat:

I generally don't even talk to cops, much less fuck them, but I did have a surprisingly pleasant interaction with one of Philly's finest last Sunday. An older black gentleman and I were at a bus stop in Center City trying to figure out the incomprehensible detours that had been put in place to accommodate the Greek Independence Parade. We were heading in what we thought was the right direction and my companion spotted a cop car parked in the intersection and declared, "I'm gonna ask the law right there." The "law" was as confused as we were, but said there should be a transit supervisor coming by shortly. We three had a brief and enjoyable conversation about Philly and then the 48 finally showed up.

I regret that cops have such a bad reputation, and some of my regret is out of sympathy for them. Many individual cops want to work to improve their communities. They are unlikely to be newsworthy. It was! It was when I was living in an old woolen mill in White River Junction, Vermont, with four men, all of whom were either current or previous boyfriends of each other. What a house that was! One of them waited too long to bake the cake and the party had already started. So, he attempted to ice it while it was still hot. The top layer almost slid onto the floor but he caught it just in time. It was one of the best birthday parties I'd ever had.

@Dean: My favorite cousin was NYPD, and he was one of the scant few good ones. I've known others who were truly service-oriented. But... I have such a hard time with the institution. Like many things, it's complicated, especially when I live in a small town and like to maintain good relationships with as many people as possible, including the police. So few things are binary. Except for 1s and 0s.

we have a few good cops here. the whole local force is generally decent, which is the key.
many people become cops with good intentions and a sense of fairness, but get intimidated within the force until they comply with the rampant hate, racism, sexism and general assholeness.

- and then there's the state cops of new york and new jersey, who have the Love "trained" out of them (like the military) until they're basically robo-hate machines.
