Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

I'm planning on playing a four-movement Isang Yun Symphony in the coming weeks... do folks think it would be better to split the movements across a couple weeks, or hear all 42 minutes together the way Classical Radio would do? (that was the poll question, for those joining the chat late)

there's a wfmu show host (maybe on one of the present schedules, maybe not) that at one time had a regular 2-hour show...someone i'm quite fond of; so not dissing him!
but he'd occasionally mention how he's apprehensive about playing long tracks because he only has 2 hours. he'd talk about this extensively, and was extremely verbose in general; and repeated himself sometimes 3-4 times in the course of every mic break!
...couldn't help but think he had *plenty* of time to play long tracks!

Longer and shorter programming. I get the conundrum. Many years ago, KPFK, the Pacifica station in LA had a four-hour opera show, hosted by Fred Hiatt (Hyatt?). It was a joy, every Sunday morning. Fred would feature excerpts from recitals, but also entire opera performances. I donated in part because Fred's show was so special. Then the station hired an idiot for a GM, a guy who equated quality radio with ROI...even at a non-profit. Of course, the Opera Show couldn't carry its weight. Four hours of air time did not deliver 1/42 of a week's fundraiser quota. So he cut the show to two hours, and later to one. What a monumental dick.

Monday Morning Quaterback time:
Cool show! (interesting that Dutch Radio broadcasts in English-did get to see Bennink a few times with Willem Breuker, he's a character).
I usually avoid RSD (hate the crowds, usually hours waiting to even get into the stores near me). Nice stuff available, though; the Tatum, Frisell, Waldron/Lacy, Sun Ra, Sanchez (surprised me a bit), Lateef jump out).
Thanks, Peter!
(I sent some Herbie Nichols, Love Gloom Cash Love, and versions of Nichols' music by Buell Neidlinger and Ben Allison, to a few DJs. Let me know if you'd like me to send them. Also have some live recordings that might be of interest).
Oh, and I vote for full pieces (if I'm still allowed to vote)
Avatar 🕰 6:41pm
Listener Gregory:

From the future: No, Peter, I do NOT sing along with Don Pullen like a child. What an idea. I whistle along, like a responsible adult. And let me tell you, I add a few flourishes that George Adams might be proud of.
Avatar 🕰 6:50pm
Listener Gregory:

I realize that the future might be too late to vote in your survey, but here's my vote. I would strongly prefer to hear the compositions as a whole. Yes, you might lose a few listeners, but that is the joy of free form radio. And you would be doing full justice to the work.
