cats are interesting. they don't give the least bit of a fuck about humans or any other animals, in general; are not empathetic; and they smell and are generally filthy, with their own saliva covering most of their bodies. besides that most people are allergic to them.
- but they are interesting.
as highly evolved predatory mammals, i have great respect for them.

i've had cats and lived with some... and tha's shat i did, for the most part (suffered).

but some cats seem to not bother me that much.

my first cat was angora, and she didn't bother me too bady...

when visiting people with cats, i've found a big factor is how frequently the place is cleaned (mostly after the cats, i mean).

and i feel bad when friends, and family, etc. who are concerned when i visit and offer to clean or report that they just had (so i should be fine).

it's not that simple/easy
and a big factor is me - to remeber not to touch my face.
plus a friend who was a nurse (and saw me sufferung ina cat house at family gatherings/holidays and gave me some nasal spray that was bulletproof.

i was impervious (i don't recall the name offhand.. not sure wether otc or not (prolly, eh)).

(not sure it even made the last move with me)

maybe. i haven't observed cats that much since making this deduction. but i have lived with them, many times, and it seems that, as with most animals, everything they do can be attributed to taking care of their own needs or desires.

i'm apparently much more allergic to some than others. same with dogs but to much less an extent.
...
i once had friends, a couple who i'd visit. we'd hang for several hours then i'd sleep on the same sofa that the cat spent most of his days on. never had a reaction. she used to bathe him every month or 2.
then the pair split up. it was his cat but after she left, Benny (cat) got a bath only like once/year.
then i couldn't spend 20 minutes there without a bad reaction.

i can and do say the same about the majority of humans.
there is a difference though, because humans are not necessarily hunting animals. humans also have the benefit/curse of understanding the future/consequences and pragmatism.
so, although it may be ultimately for their own sake, many people develop empathy in the course of understanding that what goes around comes around. and i think genuine Love, sometimes.
i don't think we're born with it though. i think we're born as selfish as any other animal...just trying to survive.

All non-human animals are innocent of all wrongdoing. Only humans are imbued with a conscience, which many choose not to use fully.

good point about humans seeing future consequences as distinct from animals as far as being born with ability to empathsize i'd look to chomsky and his belief that language is innate

Wifey had Covid 2020. scrambled her Brin a little. She lost Empathy and can behave in a spoiled childlike way. The prescription for dealing w lack of empathy is empathy.
