You see a blanket on the ground. It's your favorite color, smooth and soft. You can sit on it, or lie on it. It's a flying blanket, and you are the pilot. You are in control. You can fly anywhere you wish, just by thinking about it. You are the pilot.

Mr. Serra enjoyed both great notoriety and great fame over the course of his long career, with notoriety coming first. In 1975, a rigger was crushed to death when one plate of a piece being installed at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis accidentally came loose.

and this from 1988...
Two workers were injured, one seriously, when a 16-ton steel sculpture toppled on them in a SoHo art gallery yesterday morning, pinning the men for several minutes.

When the free-standing sculpture fell, it knocked down two of nine cast-iron structural support columns in the five-story loft building at 142 Greene Street. Officials evacuated the building for the rest of the day while city inspectors assessed the damage.

The workers were removing the sculpture, ''Reading Cones'' by Richard Serra, from the first-floor Leo Castelli gallery when a set of heavy-duty jacks collapsed. Half of the sculpture crashed to the floor shortly before 11:30 A.M. It was not known why the jacks failed.

The $200,000 work - two pieces of three-inch-thick curved steel, each weighing about 32,000 pounds and measuring 17 by 14 feet - was being shipped to storage, said the gallery director, Susan Brundage.
