Back in the 40s, when everything made more sense, we had the lovely "Flatiron of Borough Park" building at 5915 New Utrecht: 1940s.nyc... -- still standing, but now horribly mauled of course

FYI, the former director of the Harvard Law Library recently retired from HLS, but she has taken over the executive director position of the public library system in Farmington, CT. To my mind, that was an astute move. She will love the work, and her time in academia will help immensely.

@Dean: My library's director came from academic libraries, too, but I forget the details of where and what he did. I think he's a great director (I'm a trustee of my library, so I get to see his work from various perspectives).
  10:34pm
Dean:

High school, mid-'70s, two competing vendor, TI and HP, introduce "affordable" calculators. HP's used RPN and include a weird little memory strip. TI was more intuitive. I acquired the latter, but in retrospect I wish I'd gone for the HP. RPN is cool.

That’s dynamic umlauting. It’s like Uber surge pricing or Wendy’s proposed dynamic fast-food pricing. I only add it occasionally when vowels are in high demand.

Kinda unrelated, but her book on the flooding of towns upstate to create NYC's water system is a fascinating read.
Also, everyone probably knows that Sante is a BIG fan of WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Sam Segal:

↳ Ïke @10:34
Hold up…what is “dynamic fans at-food pricing”?
  10:36pm
Dean:

@Wendy: The profession weirdly has this assumption that once you commit to one variety of library, you're stuck. I started in public, moved to special, returned to public, and now I'm in academic. It's good to have cross-pollination!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

↳ Dean @10:36
@Dean: I agree with you beyond just libraries. I was a liberal arts student at one of the best schools for that, and they demanded we do cross-disciplinary studies. It made me a better cheesemonger, reporter, and DJ, too.

WORD! Sadly, Dean, my beloved alma mater didn't make it. It closed a few years ago and I'm still in mourning for all the kiddos who will never get a Marlboro College education.

Those students have studied the gamut. Some do STEM, some Humanities -- Rhetoric?! -- some psychology or sociology or statistics... They are all well-equipped in their own ways to forge ahead and make progress.

My Dad knew it was there, but probably only because he liked the classical music concerts. Those were there, right? I think I got dragged to a few of those as a teen and sat in the car grumbling and DX-ing Boston college radio stations.
  10:50pm
Dean:

Sounds like it merged with Emerson College and became "Marlboro Institute of Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies. Marlboro students were guaranteed admission and tenure-track faculty were guaranteed teaching positions at Emerson [College]."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

↳ Ïke @10:49
Yup, that's it! The music festival has purchased the campus, which I think is a mitzvah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

@Dean (10:48) you nailed it! Marlboro's demise began with a president who was hired during my junior year who had that same bullshit ethos. Don't even get me started. Oy gevalt. I'm with you: don't run schools, libraries, or gummints like businesses! Glad to read you're an anarchist AND a socialist. Too many folks think those are mutually-exclusive. Then again, too many folks are stupid.

Wim Wenders makes me think of Ronee Blakley, married once upon a time to WW. I heard her perform live at Al's Bar, one of the punk venues of LA. It was incredible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Sam Segal:

I liked it for the most part. Felt slightly weird that the soundtrack is made up entirely of songs the main character plays on cassettes in his car. This Japanese character is supposed to listen to almost entirely American music except that one Sachiko Kanenobu song. Seemed kind of off but what do I know?
