My friend's place is a Co-Op that was specifically opened in the late 40's for middle class African Americans who were shut out elsewhere. Named for Dorie Miller, the cook who manned machine guns during the Pearl Harbor attack. That place was full of the greatest jazz musicians in the world in the 50s-70s.
