The whole 3x rent thing is BS -- in the City they are trying to limit brokers' fees and how much a LL can ask for in the way of security deposit. It's insane. I have a lot of friends -- actually pretty much all of them except for the few I know who bought back in the 80's and early 90's -- who could EASILY manage a mortgage for LESS per month than they are paying in rent, but Because Reasons they don't qualify (but have been paying rent without any skips since forever). It's insane. And it's not like you abandoned your lease; your lease abandoned YOU when the house went kabloeey. There should be a legal exception for people displaced by emergencies -- the City or whomever should cover reasonalbe security deposit fees and all of that crap if the rent is within a certain range of what you were paying before. But of course, that would mean actual controversial pro-tenant policies being written into law, and extra legal work by the Powers that Be, AND it would be favorable to lower income families and minorities (the bulk of people who get burned out of apartments in NYC anyway are largely minorities) so of course that won't happen. Cheering for you and sending positive vibes!

If they have the type of lockers like the old school ones from high school (I have a freind who has been in and out of the shelter system with her husband for the last 10 years; they only just got a place) there mabe be a loop at the bottom for a secondary padlock. If you have the scratch, I'd buy one NOW just in case a room comes up and you have an immediate need to relocate. If you have a hardbodied case, in a worse case scenario you could use a bike chain and your own lock to lock said case to a bedframe if lockers don't have a secondary hole for your own lock. Spoiler, they kind of suck but are better than nothing -- I used one back in the day when I did work/jobhunt stuff at the library. Basically good for if you are working in public and need to pee or something and don't want to re-pack your laptop. The NYPL was savvy enough to install brass loops to anchor these in a few of their branches.

The whole 3x rent thing is BS -- in the City they are trying to limit brokers' fees and how much a LL can ask for in the way of security deposit. It's insane. I have a lot of friends -- actually pretty much all of them except for the few I know who bought back in the 80's and early 90's -- who could EASILY manage a mortgage for LESS per month than they are paying in rent, but Because Reasons they don't qualify (but have been paying rent without any skips since forever). It's insane. And it's not like you abandoned your lease; your lease abandoned YOU when the house went kabloeey. There should be a legal exception for people displaced by emergencies -- the City or whomever should cover reasonalbe security deposit fees and all of that crap if the rent is within a certain range of what you were paying before. But of course, that would mean actual controversial pro-tenant policies being written into law, and extra legal work by the Powers that Be, AND it would be favorable to lower income families and minorities (the bulk of people who get burned out of apartments in NYC anyway are largely minorities) so of course that won't happen. Cheering for you and sending positive vibes!

If they have the type of lockers like the old school ones from high school (I have a freind who has been in and out of the shelter system with her husband for the last 10 years; they only just got a place) there mabe be a loop at the bottom for a secondary padlock. If you have the scratch, I'd buy one NOW just in case a room comes up and you have an immediate need to relocate. If you have a hardbodied case, in a worse case scenario you could use a bike chain and your own lock to lock said case to a bedframe if lockers don't have a secondary hole for your own lock. Spoiler, they kind of suck but are better than nothing -- I used one back in the day when I did work/jobhunt stuff at the library. Basically good for if you are working in public and need to pee or something and don't want to re-pack your laptop. The NYPL was savvy enough to install brass loops to anchor these in a few of their branches.
