Black velvet band: The earliest collected version listed was collected by George Gardiner from Alfred Goodyear of Axford, Hampshire, England in July 1907.[7] Both Alfred Goodyear's version and one collected by Clive Carey from Mrs Terry of Chithurst, Sussex, in 1911 (and set in Belfast)[8] contain the "Her eyes they shone like diamonds" chorus also collected from Harry Cox.

I totally blanked on our dept. holiday party yesterday. Too much going on. I was supposed to bring potato pancakes from Greenpoint but instead had to run out on the lower Upper West Side and find something fast. This town has gone to hell -- not a knish to be found. Fortunately, everybody likes pizza. Grabbed a grandma pie, and all were quite content.

Thanks for posting that, Handy! That was good reading. I'd listened to the Pogues often in my late teems and early 20s. My regular listening to the Pogues fell off at some point, although I was still a fan. I can't say I closely listened to them for decades. I really appreciated the Shane tributes on WFMU. It was great for me to listen to his music with "matured" ears and a btter understanding of Shane as a person.

I made 150 latkes for my family Chanukah party, but they're gone by now. Pizza always works (at least for me). I picked up cookies from a new-ish gourmet (read: expensive) cookie joint, Crumbl and brought them in. My diet is totally shot (not really a formal diet, but trying to watch that weight...)

Heh. I remember right after hitting my two weeks after the second shot mark and deciding to go out again for the first time in over a year. I joined K8 and her guitar player for a couple of drinks before they went to practice. I got the bill for my two Manhattans and reeled like a yokel! "But I could get an entire BOTTLE of rye for that much!"

I started cocktailing during the pandemic.

But yeah, the Manhattan premium is real. But a real Manhattan diner is such a comfort sometimes. We had a couple of beers at one across the street from Symphony Space before a Richard Thompson show last year, on a raw and rainy December night, and it was just a perfect slice of NYC life to dip into and pay way too much for.

Yeah, as a vinyl junkie (never stopped even when they were hard to find), the "vinyl revival" was good in one way, many previously unavailable things (on vinyl) came out, but prices have risen sharply, $25-50 for plain old record releases, and some audiophile vinyl can sell for $100-150!!! The price and demand has also spiked prices for used vinyl. Makes me think about CD's or downloads more seriously when I'm buying a record (still go for the LP more often than not, but have gone for the CD sometimes. Still can't go for just the download...)

Of course - I think it maybe just as important to show us our 'Justice' System occasionally succeeds @ its mandate.
As well as exposing people like that who are heroes to a certain segment for what they are - & specifically why.

Good point. Things are still working. sometimes the media makes it seem as though all is already lost; so such outcomes are reassuring. Meanwhile, I see Rudy bunkered down in some kind of plenary sessions for an imagined future. Hopefully this ruling will take the wind out his sails. I haven't spent a lot of time in record stores since the vinyl renaissance, probably should. When I was in college on the 6 1/2 year plan, one of my part-time jobs was exclusively for record buying. I have literally 100s of records that I keep in the basement because there's no room where the dogs and a human or two live. I'm pretty selective buying new stiuff now, and stick mostly to digital buys on Bandcamp when I can.

I'm guessing 75% of the music I listen to is FMU, another 5% on KALX and Soma, and the rest is digital when I'm driving or doing something where I like to have a little more control over what's playing (like a housework mix/cooking mix/people invading my space mix

Been to a few of these without too much intentional planning--just happened to be a lot of listeners and DJs at the same shows. Would be happy to do something like this. I'm sure the YLT shows worked this way last week but I didn't have the scratch and had just seen them on the last tour. Maybe next year.

I went to the YLT show Dec 2022-they're hit or miss, seems to me (at least, mine was disappointing, but I then read about some that seemed amazing). Wasn't going to do it again this year (also just hate standing only venues, getting too old...)
