i adore the Nancy and Lee version, but do not think i have ever heard the original -- i will search for that!

other favorite versions of Summer Wine: Lana Del Rey 🍒🍒 with Barrie-James O'Neill, and Natalia Avelon with Ville Valo 🖤🖤 -- the latter from the German film about Uschi, Das Wilde Leben ("The Wild Life"), later called Eight Miles High (curious to see this -- Uschi is a fascinating person! but seems like it has never been released in the States)

most cringey version: The Corrs with Bono -- The Corrs are fine, but Bono is absolutely nauseating 🤮🤮

i remember first hearing the original when i was ~9-10 years old and being a little outraged! and hating the fact that the music was so good, with lyrics i don't want to hear.
but eventually i realised it's just a reaction of a hurt person, and there're much worse lyrics in music.
"runaround sue" is so bad i wont listen to it.
"wild world" by cat stevens is fucking unbearable!
...but ultimately i don't like the lyrics of under my thumb because it's petty and unenlightened- regardless of what gender it's coming from.

I think sometimes lyrics can paint a picture that is ugly and the song can still be great. "Feel So Good" by Richard Thompson comes to mind

i'm just glad i don't hear lyrics (and would know none if it wasn't for the internet and record inlay sheets)

was just saying there's an unbalanced power dynamic, so it's not as bad coming from one as the other...;)

absolutely.
but i'm sure Mr. Thompson was being satirical,no?

Hey Sara, thanks for the rad show! If someone would have told me I'd be grooving to Johnny B Goode, Jailhouse Rock and Eve of Destruction, I'd have called them a filthy liar lol. Thanks for the fresh look through these amazing covers!!
