' Fela Aníkúlápó Kútì (born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti; 15 October 1938 – 2 August 1997), also known as Abàmì Ẹ̀dá, was a Nigerian musician, bandleader, composer, political activist, and Pan-Africanist. He is regarded as the King of Afrobeat, a Nigerian music genre that combines West African music with American funk and jazz. At the height of his popularity, he was referred to as one of Africa's most "challenging and charismatic music performers". AllMusic described him as "a musical and sociopolitical voice" of international significance.
Kuti was the son of Nigerian women's rights activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. After early experiences abroad, he and his band Africa 70 (featuring drummer and musical director Tony Allen) shot to stardom in Nigeria during the 1970s, during which he was an outspoken critic and target of Nigeria's military juntas. In 1970, he founded the Kalakuta Republic commune, which declared itself independent from military rule. The commune was destroyed in a 1978 raid that injured Kuti and his mother. He was jailed by the government of Muhammadu Buhari in 1984, but released after 20 months. He continued to record and perform through the 1980s and 1990s. Since his death in 1997, reissues and compilations of his music have been overseen by his son, Femi Kuti. '

I saw three variations on the same dance show (solo, 11 dancers, 3 dancers). Pretty cool setup, with small speakers under seats: the concept was the dancers(s) were conducting, and the audience was the orchestra. Music was Rite of Spring, so the "conductor" got more unhinged as it unfolded

Thanks for asking-insurance companies being as, ahem, efficient as they are, it took from Saturday (when I had the accident and called it into them) until Thursday until an adjuster went to see it, then Friday they towed it to a shop who actually would repair it, who got it but will check it on Monday and give me more details. Not a total loss, though, but who know when I get it back (and have to rent until I do). Annoying, but not tragic...

Inspired by James Brown, but definitely JUJU. Saw Fela once, and it was quite loose in free-form way, with large sections of both music and dance improvisation, conducted by Fela. "You go out and dance. Now you go out and dance. You come back here. You go out there and solo now..." He commanded people in this way when I saw him. There were enough people on the stage for three or four bands, so they could exhaust themselves and then the next wave would take over. Fela was very stoned. And very angry. And a panther pacing around looking to get free.

It was, Played for over four hours, in an afternoon show, in a public park as part of a larger weekend festival where Toronto's white oblivion to a real groove was writ large. A bit like James, but Fela was like a prince or a king, which I think he was in some way. The band were his people, like citizens within his compound, over which he ruled. Well educated guy, behind all the pigeon, but that only made him even more of a post-colonial ticking time-bomb. Seemed pretty racist, but I can't blame the guy. The s*** that happened to him. Man.

I don't know-it certainly does help marketers to know the audience they're aiming at, but musicians fall into categories often (beboppers have a standard way of organizing tunes and playig on chords, bluegrass musicians have a language they learn and utilize, reggae certainly has "rules" (the bass patterns, the hard beaT on the 3rd count), punk rock is identifiable by it's sound/organization. In fact, you couldn't have genre/rule breaking musicians if there were no rules to rebel against.

i file the logical way, first name first, circumventing the common event of artists using only their first name or only their first names *sometimes* (and creating a slight dilemma with Brian Eno)
and also the less common event of a band being named after a person (and in the case of alice cooper, a person later appropriating a band name for his profoundly inferior solo career's advancement)

my books are by height to some degree. why put a 7" tall book on a shelf that can hold a 12" book, then possibly run out of spaces that will accommodate a 12" book?
so i end up with some categories in 2 different places -possibly even 2 different rooms.

Pre-coordinated subjects aren't per se subjective, but the controlled vocabularies are how biases insinuate themselves. My library (where I work) recently reclassed a bunch of works according to LC's recent Law of Indigenous Peoples in the Americas.
