My take on Jan & Dean: Jan as a producer would hire a studio full of Wrecking Crew musicians, 2 drummers, 3-4 guitars, 2-3 bassists, horns, etc, and create these grand Spector-like backing tracks. Then when the records came out, too often the vocals would be out of tune, or would sound like they didn't care. That's where Brian Wilson had the advantage, the vocals were well-crafted and jumped out of the speakers. I never understood that about Jan Berry, why he'd get close to the finish line and slow up.
