We were in pretty far western Pennsylvania coming home from Michigan last month, spent a couple of nights at a "nice" hotel on the Allegheny that pretty clearly attracted its clientele from white Pittsburgh suburbs. There's a restaurant next door, the "nicest" you're going to find in sixty miles (the town, though, is literally the hotel, the restaurant, the wine shop, and a choclatier, right?). So we go to eat, and I'm still wearing my Black Sabbath Black Lives Matter t-shirt that I was wearing on the road that day. And I am HATED. Like a hush runs round the place. Our *server* doesn't like me. So I order a martini and settle in and get a salad with cheese and fries on it because it might be a "nice" restaurant but it's western PA. And there's this like white-boy blues band playing. Not bad. Blues songs, rock covers, enthusiasm, gray ponytails. Perfectly fine band for the circumstances. And we pay and go to throw some cash in the bucket for the band, and when we do, the singer looks at me, clocks the shirt, shakes his head, and says, "Preaching into the void here, my man."

Took me a minute, but then my little mind was pleasantly blown.

I confess I have precisely zero Sparks. I so want somebody to produce a comp of, give or take, everything that I can snag in one fell swoop. I paraded through young adulthood with them. My roommates played them all the time, and one of the roommates tried out for the band, around the time of Angst!

Ironically, I do have the sole album by The Quick, an LA band typically compared to Sparks, not least because Earl Mankey produced the album. It's a joy.
