Playing the best of Japanese Indies and underground (and other stuff). Music you will hear nowhere else! Mike has been fired from every Tokyo FM station at least once and some of them 4 times! I wear it as a stinky badge of honor because FM in Japan sucks so much. Tune in! Be there!

i think many words are onomatopoeias and people don't think about it. like "zip" or "boing" or "flip-flops" ...
and animals sounds, which are interpreted differently -as i learned young when my aunt brought back bubble gum from china with a comic on the wrapper, with a dog saying "Bah Bah" (we always said "bow-wow" or "woof" or "ruff")

Sometimes, you can watch old movies (especially in Japan) and the westerners are sometimes not impressed by the Japanese, but I think they don't realize just how desperately poor this country was for thousands of years. Japan ran WWII on a shoestring too.

Ted, Early 70's Japanese folk scene is quite interesting. I'm thinking of playing some Japanese psychedelic rock from the 60's next week.
Avatar 11:00pm
Ken Nishikawa:

Japan is the second biggest music market in the world after the US, yet, it's extremely insular even to this day. That's probably one of the reasons it became such a breeding ground for weird music.
Avatar 11:00pm
Mike Rogers:

Ted san! Have you ever seen the movie, "Funeral of Roses Parade"? You should watch that. It will blow your mind. archive.org...
It just blows my mind that that film was made in 1969. That would have never been made at that time in the USA.

I just know YMCK as their sound was simultaneously innovative and retro in 2005 when I first heard it.
Avatar 11:26pm
Mike Rogers:

Oh, that explains some things.... I was here and working at a Japanese FM station, so all we played was shit (I mean all the other shows played) I was playing UK & Japanese indies. (in those days, no one was playing Blur, or Rancid, or bands like that on Japanese radio excepting my show... Definiitely no punk.)
