A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I read Riders of the Purple Sage when I was a teen, and it was okay, but that was enough Zane Grey for me. It's kind of anti-Mormon. Which they probably deserved. But still, kind of an uncomfortable stance for the best selling Western of all time.

Another band I engineered, for my show, back in 2005. I often didn't have an engineer in spite of booking one, so I eventually figured out how to do it myself.

Here's the whole show, when I had them on in 2005. Most of the band is comprised of members of different Portland Heavy Metal Bands; Lana Rebel, the singer, was known as the bass player / singer for "Last of the Juanitas," before this.

↳ Song: "Stormy" by "The Wipers"
One of the most underrated Wipers records. After Nirvana made famous a cover version of a Wipers song, they were offered a chance to make a new album, after a lot of indifference from the press. So, rather than do a rockin' "grunge" album, like the Nirvana cover, they did a very morose, mellow album, "Silver Sail," which is beautiful, but was not popular. Then he put out this record, one of the best later-period Wipers records... that was almost completely overlooked, because the previous album was a bomb.

This band is essentially, "Thinking Fellers Union Local 282," a band I adore. (And never got to see.) But I have seen, "White Shark Shivers," which is essentially the remaining members in a new incarnation.

But I always appreciated this permutation, "Job's Daughters," mostly because I was always fascinated by what could possibly happen at real life "Job's Daughters" meetings.
