St. Vincent was on Austin City Limits repeat tonight! Touring that really fascinating 2021 “Daddy’s Home” album. Some folks didn’t enjoy her 2 stylized performances when she was on SNL that year. I was blown away by them! - reminded me of a throwback to Bowie’s 2 innovative Lodger era SNL perfs (1979 ?) - imo, so darn creative. SideStep related: have you seen the unusual mockumentary film Annie Clark created with Carrie Brownstein (etc) “The Nowhere Inn”(2020)?!
- I’m curious of your take on that one. I really want to see that film.

I first heard about them from The Ex. They have a track called "Theme from Konono" that does a good job of capturing the vibe

Yeah, they've been to Ethiopia many times, and brought Ethiopian musicians to tour with them. Terrie Hessels has also released a bunch of their records, and a few books too

WOO: first collection "which ever way your going your going wrong"(1981)is such a beautiful record! Found it at "99 Records" at McDougal St basement shop back in the day. T'was THE coolest shop in NYC at the time.

Maybe the most unexpected was when they had Zerfu Demissie open for them. The begena is an impressive instrument with a unique sound

buda musique's ethiopiques series was great and great exposure for ethiopian music, the pianist nun, maryam guebreu's music has been used in commercials here in the u.s. which i have mixed feelings about but money probably goes to her estate which is likely charitable

don't think i've ever heard begena ever, internet says traditionally, it is used for religious occasions

↳ Song: "Message in a Hammer" by "Obongjayar"
Re Song: "Message in a Hammer" by Obongjayar put me in mind of the stellar Crammed Discs album of "Zazou & Bikaye:Noir et Blanc"(1983). The vocal style could've been the son of Bikaye! I too was enamored of all things Crammed & Mark Hollander's contributions (Belgian's national treasure/innovator & musical magician). It used to be so darn challenging to find those Crammed imports back in the 80's. They'd go out of print fairly quickly. When i finally found copies of both the Aksak Maboul albums (def one of the gateways) in Montreal - my life was improved immeasurably. Then the "Honeymoon Killers 1982 album blew my new wave mind open entirely! Btw:Your subs were great. yet welcome home. Listeners rejoice.

The ethiopique series is amazing, though somewhat controversial. Reissuing all these records was great and needed, but the guy also bought the copyright for records by then living musicians, who got nothing in return. That's why, along with his refusal to release anything new, Getatchew Mekuria and Mulatu Astatke were very critical of him. Getatchew was very close to Terrie Hessels
Avatar 2:49am
tom tom the pipers son:

↳ fred @2:43
that's upsetting but probably familiar story in music business, so chances are maryam guebreu is getting no money from these commercials i'm seeing, have to look up terrie hessels
