This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

it's true, and indifference to jazz is the result of a successful cultural effort by various reactionary forces to sideline and marginalize jazz... i'm frustrated that more people, including lots of "music people," don't make the effort to overcome the conditioning a tired anti-jazz zeitgeist but it's not their fault, exactly

I just say Jazz is Blooz for people who play too well - partly as a demystifying goof - but not of course as derogative as it might sound. Thinking Historically - that's kind of what happened in New Orleans with shifting relations & condition between Race & Class (always too easy to forget the truths about The South - & how N'Orleans was the exception ...& then not ...& back again sometimes).
& also Musically - if you play in a Blues-based idiom, & get more Complex - there's kinda nowhere else to go : it's almost literally Jazz by default...
But when people say they 'don't get' Jazz - it's hard to relate to what eyes they're seeing thru. Math eyes instead of Swing or Groove or Emotions ears ...I dunno. I was fortunate I got clued in early that African-Americans had pioneered things most often several decades earlier - & it was worth my attention to learn what I could about this...

Seems to me like a lot of people still haven't grasped what POP was or what it meant. They have a desperate need for mythology of the unattainable, which was a perfect fit for advertising and possesiveness....which is partly why life is a lot more like Hell than it is like art lately

generally have an informal "no covers of songs from Hair" policy but I got super into this before I realizes what it was and I have to honor that. also it's a good cover, does its own thing with the material

Well - speaking of Eisenhower's 1950s - a big part of the 1960s conditions was - it was before Economics got sabotaged into the 1970s - with Wages to Cost of Living slowly but steadily worse & worse. Crapitalism feeds on the Myth of Scarcity (& so Striving) ...whereas Cultural Renaissances thrive on Availability... The 1960s were chaotic in every way Socially ...but the Money was pretty damned good !

we are lucky that Lee Perry gave us so many versions of "Words" and so many tracks on the Words riddim but in his infinite generosity he has also given us this nearly 9-minute discomix

I recall that, in my childhood, and I also recall my parents still believing they were economically strapped because they were permanently stuck in wartime in their minds, no matter how well they were doing. Basically there's no way to wrestle insanity to the mat

the history is super interesting, the whole industry started with handful of record-your-own-phono boxes (and oddly drew from jazz, blues, soul, but almost no rock n roll at all)
