in high school, typing classes were for the "vocational kids," and not the academic-track kids. i only got to take it because i basically failed out of algebra. best thing ever for me. i can still touch-type 50+ wpm, and that skill not only gets used daily, but it saved my ass one year when i needed quick employment. temp agencies in madison got into a bidding war for me! fun times.

The racist, homophobic narrative is something that has been recently thought up and attached to this event. That was not the reasoning behind it in 1979. It was about people who were tired of disco music as it was a growing feeling amongst rock and roll fans all over the world.

@Monica: of all the musical folx out there, perhaps you’d be *the* most qualified to de-puzzle a puzzlement for me… re the wondrous De La Soul: living rurally since 1995, I found it very challenging finding any of the post “stakes is high” albums on CDs. I never saw the 2000s era “trilogy CDs” in shops, Until 2016s ‘Anonymous Nobody’. Still intending to collect those mid-latter albums - i understand they are as stellar as the early years (if not stronger). Any perspective ?
Also: why is it that so few ever broadcast Anything from the latter De La Soul period. It’s always confounded me.

yeah, but in howdy arabia, the rockers slagging on disco were freely dropping the n-word and f-word in their disparagement of disco... so the racism and homophobia were certainly a core part of the sentiment, if not the actual narrative.

What frustrates me about this is that we (my friends and I who hated disco) hated it because of the studio 54 velvet ropes that wouldn't let anyone other than the "beautiful people" in
the clubs (and as Zappa says, there's a lot more of us ugly m-fers). We hated the dressing up and then the syncronizatio of the dances, so that if you wanted to shake your body in a way that wasn't the hustle, you were SOL. If you weren't dressed to the nines and a hot looking girl, you weren't getting in. And so many keyboards taking away from the grinding guitars that we liked. It wasn't homophobic at all in my circles nor rascist. In fact, the first date I got asked out on in high school was by another girl from a different high school and I couldn't have been more flattered. (Although I turned her down and told her that I had boy crushes, not girl crushes, but we remained pals). No, for us it was more a class warfare than anything else. I was shocked years later to find out that wasn't the case for most of the disco hating folks out there.

The layers of 1979 were different then the layers of the 2020s. This event directly expressed the way teenagers felt about disco.
I was 13 and almost went to the game that day. I never heard of it being anti gay or anti black. It was anti disco. I get it that the disco scene was heavily gay and black but I never heard this narrative until very recently.

your point about the contexts (like morticia's) are very important. in your social group in 1979, the race/sexuality element may have been ignored, but in mine (tx), it was at the foreground of "hating disco." our present-day reassessment of the sentiments are likely taking in more local contexts than what any of us individually were aware of in the 1979 moment. and this is how we learn... not in my experience... in the punk movement in texas during the late 70s and early-to-mid 80s, i was beat up regularly in high school by both rednecks and rockers for being a "punk rock 3-letter f-word" (i'm straight, if that matters at all)... one of those times was by a group of guys wearing foghat t-shirts, and including a person who is now in the country music hall of fame... our local punk scene was full of people of color (black, hispanic) and non-straight folks. very diverse and inclusive, before the mid-80s hardcore jock punk movement kick into high gear...

The original punk scenes in various places were creative misfits - a number of whom were gay and people of color. It seems like hardcore is when the racism and homophobia came in to play from the chowderheads in the crowd even while most of the bands were railing against it.
