Commenter Paul Robeson1922 on another WFMU show linked to an article that traces the first Decoration Day to an event just weeks after the Civil War ended. Just-freed slaves commemorated hundreds of Union prisoners of war who died on a horse raceway turned prison camp in Charleston, South Carolina. The Union prisoners had been treated horribly. "Decoration" refers to flowers put on graves. The holiday wasn't officially observed until a few years later.

In 1973, WNEW-FM in NYC broadcast a live concert with Procol Harum and the Edmunton Symphony. I recorded it on my little portable cassette. (not the same one that came out on album.) Eagerly, I brought it in to my high school radio station to share with others and one of the jerky co-DJs though it was funny to tap the cassette with a bulk eraser, destroying my recording. Oh well!

I have a vague recollection of a music store--records, instruments, sheet music--with listening booths in the old covered mall in Whittier.

Michael, luckily my hometown library had one of those. You had to use headphones.

i remember music libraries w/ music listening stations (part of the reason I got a waiver to take music classes at the music college at uni [as i wasn't a music major])

one of my favorite wfmu tshirts depicts something like the listening stations of more recent times.
no booths, just headphones.

Down Home Records has two CD players with headphones affixed for sampling discs.

In the LP room, Down Home has a turntable for spinning used vinyl.

still wish she would release a record w/ that title, so we can interpret whether it's an eponymous release or just a long wait in b/tn releases...

I discovered Ottorino Respighi in the listening library.

Hey Michael, Irene and my friend, Peter Biedermann plays libraries all around the North East Corridor while he lived here in Jersey and comes back every Fall since he moved to Arizona to play libraries and makes a pretty penny in doing so!

each of the 2 previous rhino records stores here had a turntable, chair & headphones near the register.
i think the current location is too small to fit that.

i used to, when i could afford to buy at such stores that would have multiple-person listening stations.
the added bonus was that it seemed to be a hot pick-up scenario!

BenZ WPB:

I never listen to a record on a turntable at a record store. Just buy the damn record. Kind of like the people requesting all the little ice cream samples on the little spoons at the store. Just pick a flavor already!
  2:47pm
Dean:

Here's Fanfare's Steven Kruger on the Chailly Respighi:
"This is quite a wonderful release. The Milan La Scala Philharmonic is deeply engaged and rich in creamy sonority and atmosphere. This is a weighty orchestra of 135 players, most surely onstage here. The woodwinds glow. You will not find more seductive Respighi anywhere."

Well, with vinyl prices at $40 or so (Hermeto Pascoal's latest on sale at shows) I usually pass. I long for the days back in high school where I used to get 3 LPs for $10! Then I could take a chance on something I'd never heard before.

The NYC Library for Performing Arts has a listening room. Stuff that's been taken out of circulation is there. I go sometimes. But I prefer to take physical copies home to listen. I think the library takes too many things out of circulation. Especially older rock.

1.99, 2.50, 3 bucks... i'd buy 15 albums i'd never heard of before based on the covers or song titles.
but one would have to be a moron to not listen to a used record now before buying at a record store with a no-return policy

I'm doing well Andrew, enjoying this relatively quiet NYC weekend.. save for the visiting fighter jets Irene mentioned earlier.. My Dad passed a year ago in mid May, his spirit right there with those jets, moving too fast for a physical hug, but certainly a salute from my fifth floor window... Memorial Day has taken on more significance, now that he is no longer with us. Dad served in the 8th Air Force during WW ll. Stationed in the UK, he was a bombardier and bomb sight technician, remaining in service and retiring from the Air Force Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel. Thanks Irene for this special show.. My Dad instilled the joy of music in this life.. As an aeronautics engineer after the war, he was fascinated with Hi Fi audio, along with possessing the skills to build his own system. I miss him dearly... Hope to cross paths with you soon! xoxoP
