Right! Joan was in all sorts of TV shows through the 60s and even the 70s.

Erik/VermonT:

Joan Blondell is one of my favorite actors.
- I’m lucky enough to have TCM network (broadcasts lots of her great movies). She is the Brassy tops !
(from the pre-codes to her late period cameos).
IMO, One film & role that isn’t as typically brassy as most, but is a standout dramatic masterpiece = Nightmare Alley (1947). Best ever Tyrone Power performance as well. Kicks the G.del Toro remake to the curb. 😊
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
Krys O.:

Hi, Erik! I have it glued to TCM too. I grew up watching old movies with my older siblings. Don't tell anyone, but I preferred Joan Blondell to Ruby Keeler. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Krys O.:

Yes, the original Nightmare Alley is singularly great. I don't think I could watch the recent remake.

I always recognize her when she pops up here and there. But the only two other memories I can recall right now is when she did an episode of The Twilight zone with William demarest. And she was a waitress in the movie Grease.

Erik/VermonT:

@krysO: hahaha, oh definitely ditto that.
Joan over Ruby ! Although both great.
I am also a super Susan Hayward fan. So many / too many to mention…yet the trio of Smash Up ‘47, I’ll Cry Tomorrow ‘55 & I Want to Live ‘58 are all devastating & beautiful.
Btw: have you seen the unusual 1930 film “Madam Satan” (1930) ? - Lillian Roth has some memorable moments in that one !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
Krys O.:

↳ Erik/VermonT @1:55
I agree. Hayward really put her all into those roles. Ida Lupino is a favorite too.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:57pm

Krys, thanks for the Lightfoot retrospective. Appreciated here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm

I saw parts of Madam Satan. Might still have it on my DVR.

Oh, also: Madam Satan = best dirigible blimp party scene film ever !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm

My pleasure, Sem. I was lucky to have older hippy siblings. I heard lots of early John Denver too. Also learned about Firesign Theater and so much more.

Mind you, The Hindenburg does have a great cast.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:13pm

I kinda like Cremaster 3. Maybe it's related to its featuring Guinness
C4 and C2 are OK for me, but C1 and C5...
There's some symmetry in that, which might have been intended
I don't like what Barney did, but I respect his ability. Seeing Drawing Restraint 9 in a regular theater was something, with people booing because they came to see a Björk musical. I really liked some of it though

  2:37pm
Erik/VermonT:

@KO: indeed, Ida Lupino fan as well !
- attended a few special Ciné Salon events featuring her films. Occasionally with Lupino scholars. TCM rules for self education on these matters. Yet, I’ve been lucky enough to attend fine art & film theaters most of my lifetime.
Ps: isn’t TCM host Eddie Muller (the Noir Czar) the greatest host since sliced bread.

Pax:

↳ Krys O. @1:37
As you know Grease was one of those Big block office smash Hit movies, but I never seen the appeal in it. So by the time it came to television in reruns once a week for the next ten years or so it seemed, i resisted from watching it. But one day i eventually did, i guess because nothing else was on and just out of curiosity. Just as I expected it didn't bowl me over. But it was ever so slightly better than i thought it would be, but not nearly enough to make me feel any different about the movie. So imho you're not missing anything worthwhile watching. Although I am surprised that you've never seen it yourself. Well anyway Joan Blondell was a waitress at a restaurant called frosty's or something like that, that the gang went to after school.

I loathed the songs from Grease that were played incessantly on the radio back then especially the rape-y Summer Nights. I'm not a total snob when it comes to popular films by any means, but I tend to stay away from many of them. I did enjoy the Little Shop of Horrors musical, for example.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm

  2:47pm
Erik/VermonT:

Grease the original musical on Broadway was a good time. I’d stick with attending a theatrical musical version. (Although it’s way past it’s moment by now).
Not that they’re related - but I’d watch Rocky Horror over Grease - 100%.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
Krys O.:

↳ Erik/VermonT @2:47
Oh, I was a fan of Rocky Horror in the old days. Had the S/T album and listened after school. My brother took me to see it with all the TP and toast. I was 12/13 years old back then.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm

I was also a HUGE fan of Tim Curry. Joined the fan club, had his albums, etc. He was terrific in Three Men in a Boat with Michael Palin directed by Stephen Frears in 1975.
