I just looked up the Wikipedia entry for "consumerism", and it does go into the history of the term, and the earliest they give is the one I was familiar with, "efforts to support consumers' interests". Now I feel sooo ooollllddd.

Also so old by hearing these people's "gateway" WFMU hosts, who are like the new guys from my perspective! For me it was either Pat Duncan or Frank O'Toole in late 1980,

Canada *does* have certain major issues, such as intense domination of telecommunications by just a few giant cell/internet companies that overprice everything, so maybe Canadians who are sick of being ripped off by Bell CA, Rogers etc. are all too aware of what unregulated corporate behavior can wreak.

True, I also ran into some anti-immigration sentiment on a road trip to Nova Scotia several months ago… “too many foreigners in Toronto”, “those Indian drivers are terrible” and that kind of thing. Some Americans see CA as some kind of paradise (grass is always greener…) but this shit exists everywhere unfortunately.

Everything that Mark has reported regarding Spotify is definitely true, but Spotify took advantage of the sad trend of the music's devaluation. Spotify saw the writing on the wall -- folks started to prefer stealing/borrowing/copying music instead of actually buying it outright. Spotify has made billions by giving folks the illusion that they've chosen the "no guilt" option.

Anyway, Mark's show is one of the most important on WFMU's schedule. This show in particular was quite amazing: www.wfmu.org...
