Fantastic Planet was one surreal mindfnck for an animated feature! First time I saw it was on a special presentation of PBS' International Animation Festival. Then it appeared on cable TV in the 80's. (Showtime ran it, iirc.)

Just to mention International Animation Festival brings memories of how rich & adventurous PBS was back in the day.

Correction: Now that my memory has been further jogged, turns out that I first saw it on WNEW-TV back in the late 70's.

yep that appears to be the length of the movie from other results on my search.

Great your airing this fantastic soundtrack out !
So sorry to learn why. (No wonder it popped up as a YouTube sidebar this week).
Fantastic Planet/La Planete Sauvage 1973 is so cool !
- in many ways the soundtrack surpasses the film.

Imdb says 72 min, director's cut, I guess

I watched that program faithfully as a tween. Lots of Eastern European animation featured, along with Bozzetto's work & the like.

Hi Devon! I saw the fab Fantastic Planet first in a Unitarian Church in Illinois in the '70s.

There was also a British-French co-produced educational programme called Vision On that also occasionally featured some East European animated shorts.

Hi Devon and islanders!

ERIK / VermonT:

@ Rev Rabbit : (considering we are nearly neighbors), have you attended many film screenings & or concerts at Dartmouth over the years ? (If so, we’ve probably seen each other). Unfortunately the free avant garde cine salon (at Howe Library in Hanover NH) , got cancelled last year after 25+ years ! They screened Fantastic Planet (not too long ago).
Do you get over to AVA art gallery events ?
Lebanon Opera House events ?

Devon E. Levins:

Hi All, Finally catching a breath. I first saw La Planete Sauvage one late Sat nite mid 80s on Night Flight on cable but it should be experienced in a theater if at all possible!

I've barely ever gotten to Dartmouth events a handful of times - I neither drive, nor just now have any income whatsoever. In Lebanon, I'm virtually inbetween AVA & the Opera House - all within a block here. The Opera House only rarely has anything I wanna see ...& less all the time even maybe - tho I've seen Richard Thompson, Roger McGuinn & Lucinda Williams here. It's pretty MOR smalltown NewEngland fare on the whole. People may have thot it a worthwhile stop betwixt maybe Boston & Burlington or even Montreal what have you ...but I think as things are now they don't consider it worth the effort for what they'll earn I reckon...

ERIK / VermonT:

@ Rev Rabbit: thanks for informing.
- your in a pleasant small town location there.
Waking distance to the tiny “Lebanon scene”.
I agree that over the years , (especially now!) there has been a significant falling-off on quality events / concerts etc. Well, at least they’ve revived the anonymous coffeehouse at the church. (Not that it’s in my wheelhouse, particularly). Cheerio to ya.
  8:58pm
Androu B.:

Thanks, Devon! It's obvious from tonight's show that Goraguer was definitively one of French Cinema's most accomplished master composers of soundtrack music.
