the last time i had a landline, 2001, the woman i lived with and i made a possibly funny outgoing message. neither of us thought about the music on in the background as we made it, but a few weeks later, after she'd called home and got the machine, she pointed out that it was giant sand; and the only words discernible were "all that suction"

i always got answering machines that used regular cassettes, and when they were full i'd start a new one, instead of recording over them (although i'd often rewind and set it to record over part of it)
so i have ...15-20? cassettes full of messages.
only used one once for a sound collage; but maybe one day. . .
it's tedious because most messages aren't worthy of subjecting anyone else to. probably 2-3 entertaining ones per 90-minute tape.

My parents used an answering service in the '70s. I hated it. Sometimes I'd call my own house and a stranger would answer and I'd have to explain I was just trying to call my damn house.

i once lived in an apartment with a roach problem, mostly in the kitchen, one day i noticed the answering machine, in the bedroom, smelled funny, like urine . i opened it up to find roaches, baby roaches crawling around in the circuitry. so the roach were not just in the kitchen.
