Serious, non-ironic question: In the last few years, the artistic reputation of several "un-hip" bands has been reconsidered by the hipoisie - I'm thinking mostly of Steely Dan and the Grateful Dead. Is Billy Joel ever going to be rehabilitated? Or is he just terminally uncool?

@Yetz, my perception is slightly different; I feel there's been a major backlash against canonical bands like Steely Dan and the Doors, and that many people have always hated the Grateful Dead and their fans. As for Billy Joel, I don't think he'll get a major re-evaluation on the level of say, Paul McCartney, whose output was maligned and ignored for decades until fairly recently.

Hughie - I agree about Paul McC. The thing about the Dead is, like you say, people have hated them and their fans for years, but now people like Lee Ranaldo, Jesse Jarnow, etc, are confessing to being Deadheads. And then there are bands like Garcia Peoples. Maybe the Steely Dan thing is just among Inzane Johnny followers ...

The Billy Joel cat adoption room at North Shore Animal Rescue is worth the price of admission. The cat shelters are amps labeled "Feline" instead of "Fender," and there's an actual piano for the cats to walk over the keys of.

Heaping on my own uncoolness, I love Steely Dan. I love a few of the Grateful Dead records. I was really into the Doors for a while and still enjoy hearing a lot of their catalog. McCartney is great, even though he has gone through long duldrums (who hasn't?). All that said, I have well-known hatreds for certain recently-critically-rehabilitated 80s pop prog groups, but I have been advised to keep those opinions to myself on the boards.

Definitelty, Hughie. The jam bands never went away. But somehow, at least to me, there seems to be a bit of a dropping of the "Oh, the Dead, I would *never* listen to that" kind of attitude among a certain kind of music listener. Maybe I'm just talking about myself, but I think it's a bit wider.

I remember young Billy Joel being spoken of in the same breath as young Elvis Costello and young Joe Jackson when he was first starting out (one of the "angry young men"). Then he became more mainstream. But I can totally see a Young Billy Joel cartoon series where the go around solving mysteries with young Elvis C and Joe J.

One of my favorite parts of Step Brothers is the band that only plays 80s Billy Joel. People in the crowd keep calling for "Piano Man" or something from The Stranger, till the singer loses it and yells at one of them "Yeah well why don't you get the fuck out of here with your skank hooker wife!" leading to a general brawl.

Never been a huge Doors fan, though I have warmed to them a bit over the years, but I can't imagine any other song but "The End" opening Apocalypse Now, so all is forgiven.

BillyJoel only one mentioned here I have a notable allergy against. & FMU-Js have played something by him I thot was not terrible.
Main thing to me is not being force-fed anything - & having some variety in a big world saturated with Musics - a great(er) %age of which I've never heard before @ all or even too little. FMU steps up as powerfully here as anything Ive encountered in my (increasingly long) life - if not more. (New era of course of access.)
Having said that ...it is interesting how we've come utterly full circle from the Punk short fast simple ethos back to Jammers. But @ this historical remove - why not.

OK fun bit of Grateful Dead nanotrivia from me: I went to Cornell with a really cool guy named Starfinder Stanley -- he was one of my best friend's roomies at the Eco House Dorm. He was also the son of the "Bear," the Dead's LSD hookup. Starfinder never did any drugs/booze himself and had a mini-menagerie of critters in his shared room and really knew how to care for them all. Really nice kid. Now he's a very successful vet in the Bay area, and treats exotic species as well as kitties and doggos: housecallofthewild.com

On that subject, I follow an online poll in the manner of the Village Voice pazz and jop survey that has recently been hijacked by a commentator who called the popular fave of the year, Wet Leg, a pile of shit, and a huge kerfuffle resulted. That's the problem when "my favorite" becomes "the best" and people feel they have to crap on other people's tastes. But I guess self-righteous critics have been modeling that for ages.

Idea that Music & Language are centered for us in somewhat different lobes of the brain ...& Articulating the qualities of Musics is ...what exactly...
Sisyphusian ? I find it an interesting exercise. Which takes real practice - @ the very least... In Philosophy, debate is almost always predicated by Definitions - so yer talking about the same thing to begin with. With Arts ...words will require Poetic perception & Technical understanding alike...

One time one of the CDs was this Joe Walsh album, which he demanded we put on so he could hear "Life's Been Good." I love this song…Hearing it makes me wonder, is there any definitive English folk song that Simon & Garfunkel ripped off for Scarborough Fair?

I believe the S&G version was based on Martin Carthy's arrangement of the traditional song.

True, only S&G went there when they were going nowhere as songwriters and needed to get in on the hip new folk boom. Apparently when they came back to the US and played "Sounds of Silence" to the Greenwich Village hipoisie, they provoked derisive laughter.

One really safe bet when listening to old-timey British Isles music: if you hear the word "pale", coming up next is "and wan".

[dunno if I linked this comment to the song which prompted it; I got to the playlist late]
