Yesterday when coming back from Budapest to Szolnok, I saw the police cordoning off an area of the Nyugati train station. But they let me into that part, since I needed to pass through it to get to my train. Several hundred refugees (all coming from Ukraine, apparently, but of different nationalities) were getting off a train, and there were volunteers offering to help with translation, etc.

Handy Haversack:

I think I have mentioned before that my dad's dad was lost at sea in 1927/28 trying to sail alone from Tahiti to Fiji? I have some of the letters he exchanged with my dad, whom he had basically abandoned with relatives after my dad's mom died in childbirth in Paris. Left him in Washington, DC, then Waukesha, WI. He was a geological engineer and was exploring for mineral rights in the islands but really wanted to be a writer and was trying to write stories for National Geographic.

It's pretty heartbreaking stuff since my dad is young, like 12-13 in those letters I have, and clearly feels abandoned and lost and is trying to act brave for his father.

I also have the notes from the colonial governments confirming his loss at sea and a few other things.

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:18pm

Yes, my "aunt" (my dad's cousin whose family he lived with through high school and who sent him to college for three years before deciding they could send only her) gave them to me (she was also Jorma and Peter Kaukonen's mother), and I have managed to hang onto them.

But as Bas says, this music is always tinged with the heartache in those letters from my dad to his dad -- almost a hundred years ago!

...just listening to StrangeBrew podcast - interview w/ author of 'Dylan, Lennon, Marx & God' - how Dylan was U.S.American & had much Transcendentalist Nature & Individualism for themes - whereas Lennon from England had Victorian/Edwardian & Class (War) themes ...but how they both reached to earlier periods then in the 1960s more remote to us now (End of Empire & such)...

I bet you do Bas, given the color palette in Noordzee-adjacent countries this time of year. (I do like your country in general, and in the winter -- but verdomd -- those dark days back in November really got into my bones somehow)

Though I will say -- when do you catch the sun breaking through winter clouds, over some perfect Dutch canal setting somewhere -- it can be quite nice

Here in NorthNewEngland we like to @ least get cred for being Northern & climatically extreme. So always interesting to consider climes even further on that spectrum... It's a challenge ! The Culture has to adjust to that, one thinks, to get Individuals thru it...

Avatar 2:37pm
brainiac:

Well Rev Rabbit, this seems like a perfect opportunity to bring up a pet theory of mine concerning Lennon's recording of "God" in 1970. (Not to derail your discussion of lit in pop music.)

I maintain that the piano part in "God" was lifted from "Love Letters" by Ketty Lester (1962). My theory is that it was the corrosive influence of Phil Spector which encourage Lennon to base the song on the older recording.

I haven't read anything about this, have you? Just wanted to bounce my theory off you...
