We have Fruit Bats, (Flying Foxes) in the City Park my town. They fly out by the hundreds at dusk every night. Pretty impressive when they are the size of a Chihuahua.

in southern colorado c.1999 i was at a hot spring/camping resort and we took a guided tour on horseback to the bat cave at dusk to witness bats fly out, over us. i lay down to take pictures and some flew within 1-2' of my head.
the guy estimated 3-4000/night that year -down from ~9-10,000/night up until a year or 2 before.

coela, about the same time, I was involved in an abandoned hard rock mine survey in the Gila National Forest in New Mexico and routinely had to crawl into mine adits to check for bat colonies. I was less than thrilled with that task.
